Hey all, I'm starting boxing on this coming Tuesday. I have been lifting weights to bulk up for a very long time. in 2.5 years ive gone from 110 to 160. I've been wanting to try boxing for quite some time. Now i am so excited about it and have made it a top priority with weight lifting just supplemental to boxing. I've gained too much fat so im cutting down to 145 as this is where i believe ill be very solid. I have looked at the sticky regarding a beginner's routine. It said that it is very good for beginners to exercise as well. I was thinking could i take some things out like 1 bday i could do 20 rep squats instead of doing a very long session of squats, lunges, and wall sits? And id like to add in a few sets of power cleans and light deadlifts maybe to replace one day of the plyometrics? One last thing id like to add some dips in on the A day to replace one of the forms of push ups as i feel dips and chins are the greatest upper body exercises ever. Other than that i dont want to change much. I'm quitting bench pressing as it's useless. I was thinking like Tyson did add in some shoulder shrugs maybe on one or 2 a days of the week and to replace the chins with them. I know chin ups are superior but Id like to have a thick neck/traps which is of course really useful in boxing. so are these changes okay to you guys? the thing is though that i have school every other day so i could do sprint intervals in the morning but would it be alright if i do the A day workout an hour before class or even after which would be at night? Here's a look at what i planned (so i dont have to write it out i plan on jump roping as soon as i wake up or right before i go to boxing class 5x3 minute rounds) Sunday: Rest Monday: A day + sprint intervals + Boxing class Tuesday: B day + 45 minute jog + Boxing class Wednesday: A day + sprint intervals + Boxing class + plyometrics Thursday: Boxing class (B day legs moved to Saturday since id be lifting) Friday: A day + sprint intervals + Power cleans/deadlifts + Boxing class Saturday: 20+ rep squat + 3 sets to failure calf raises + 45 minute jog
You're overtraining. I don't think you quite know how physically heavy a boxing training is. Start with 2 times a week and don't jog/sprint on the day you train, if you do want to do it, do it after training.
2 times a week of what? Boxing? I'm starting Tuesday. i was just going to follow the sticky beginner's routine with some modifications which would be considered overtraining then right?
You won't manage with that routine, Boxing class is very very very intense. Welcome to ESB by the way and goodluck with boxing! :good
okay thanks man. What if i just go to boxing class every week day or at least 3x a week and do sprints/jog after class and on days off? and would jump roping 5x3 minute rounds as soon as i wake up 6 days a week be too much? also would it be alright to do some lifting on Saturday? I guess I'll be doing a lot of calesthenics during class already but if not then idk
Well, for now since your new i suggest taking as many Boxing classes as you can. If you have a day off (even sunday) do some lifting but nothing too hard. Boxing will get you fit and your coach should be able to work on conditioning for you also. Technique is the key and you need to get as much of it as possible.
yeah ill defintely go to box 5 days a week then. Saturday and Sunday there are no classes but i believe he leaves the gym open. I'll ask him to help me make up a routine centered around becoming a better boxer. if he has the class do a lot of calesthenics then i wont need to do such a thing besides run everyday when i wake up switching between long jogs and sprints.i just dont want my legs to get weak as in lose a lot of maximal strength as that should be benefitial in boxing. So on the weekneds I'll throw in some light squat/deadlift work if im feeling up to it.
You want to do too much in too short a time frame. First go to that training and go from there, don't plan too much ahead. Boxing 5 times a week will just make you get hurt, you need those off days to rest and to think what you did wrong and want to improve on and watch boxing videos of some of the greatest. Like I said, start with 2 times a week and then gradually build up to 5 times. I personally never run anymore because running makes my arms really fatigued if I combine it with boxing, I am able to perform better if I don't run at all. When I just started back in November I also wanted to train daily but you will learn that impossible for a beginner
H Oh wow okay. Is it okay if I practice shadow boxing and jump rope at home? Or would that even be too much?
Haven't read all your OP but forget conditioning whilst your learning the fundamental. Just concentrate on boxing . With that regime you'll be too fatigued learn
