Roberto Duran fought Carlos Mendoza in both of their pro debuts. Duran went on to become one of the greatest fighters of all time, Mendoza went on to be a contender who lost to Ruben Olivares and in a title shot against Wilfredo Gomez.

Pep gave away weight (around 10 lbs IIRC) and lost on points.

Jersey Joe Walcott and Elmer "Violent" Ray fought in 1938 when they were obscure, management-less black journeymen struggling through the Great Depression, and then finally faced each other twice more in 1946 and 1947 when they were the two leading contenders for Joe Louis' title.

I'd guess a lot of that "Lost Generation" of 80's Heavyweights would have fought as amatuers? Page, Witherspoon, Tubbs, Dokes, Thomas, Tate.

Good example - this was what I was thinking when I started the thread, although I think the amateur matchups deserve mentioning as well.

I guess time will tell with Povetkin and Chambers. I think Povetkin has the goods to be legitimate champ, especially with the current state of the heavyweight division, but I'm not very big on Chambers.....

    Maskaev vs. McCall for example.

Even though they aren't great, they met very early when was anywhere close to a world champ.

Neither one necessarily "world class", but Carlos Baldomir and Josh Clottey met when Clottey wasn't really thought of as a prospect yet and Baldomir was just starting his 7 year winning streak.

Carbajal/Grigsby is a really good one, already mentioned.

Jorge Arce Vs Omar Nino Romero- Romero was 5-0 and Arce was 4-0. Romero won by UD. Arce went on to have a much better career, but Romero did have some good wins including an upset against Brian Viloria
