Most gyms that are well run will have you sparring with 16oz gloves. I always purchase 16oz gloves for sparring because they're regulation sparring gloves. But more often than not people will try to spar me with smaller gloves. 14,12,10 oz most commonly but I've even sparred people with tiny bag gloves on. I never say anything because I dont want to sound like a ***** but its an unfair advantage and it pisses me off. They're lighter so the boxer will be faster. They're smaller so he will be more powerful the only real advantage the 16oz have is size to protect your face and hands. Then I think, since i'm at a disadvantage it will be good training. My hand speed will increase, I wont rely too much on power. Now i am a puncher with a good chin, I prefer smaller gloves but to make sure everything is fair I use the 16oz its just kind of annoying that I go out of my way to play by the rules and my sparring partners dont return the favor. Should I just suck it up or should I call them out on it?
i wonder if you used smaller gloves compared to your partners if they would actually be complaining. personally i use 16's and so does everyone in the gym. no questions.
Only guys I dont mind using 10oz are people who are new to sparring so I try and work on my defense more. I would never spar with bag gloves I have skin that really shows when I get hit and when I spar people with anything less than 16s I get marked up really bad.
Yeah, sparring with bag gloves is ****ing bull****, that I would call someone out on. Keep in mind, gloves weren't invented to protect the fighter's face... they originally protected a fighters hands. You spar with bag gloves you're liable to break a knuckle, and that will put you out for a long time. ****, I broke my hand using 20oz gloves. I couldn't imagine piddly little bag gloves. At my gym, nobody sparred with anything less than 16s. 18s or 20s were the most common. Nobody even bothered with bag gloves, ever.
ive been sparring with some really cheap lonsdale gloves lately and they seem lighter, and when i found the other guys were using heavier gloves. i dont want an advantage and it doesnt gauge how good i am if im using smaller gloves. but now i need to buy some 16oz sparring gloves, any suggestions?
IF your looking for relatively cheap ones I've tried the adidas and pro box ones and I like them I think you can get the pro box ones for like £24 on sugarrays
i wonder what happened to the guy who wanted our advice on taking padding out of his gloves because someone was disrespecting him?
http://www.sugarrays.co.uk/shop/pro-box-original-sparring-boxing-gloves..html something like these? i like the colour something a bit different.
I must admit i ave one set of 16oz gloves (lemarr pro gloves) that get used for everyting. Going back to sparring the other day i offered to wear a set of the gym sparring gloves if they wanted me too but were happy that mine were 16oz. I may invest in a pair strictly for sparring though
I would definitely say something about using bag gloves. you are right that you are geting better by using larger gloves. I recently switched to using 18oz gloves and my speed has improved a large amount
