    NO!

Simply because even if you had a great jab, it still wouldn't be as effective as you'd think mainly due to Mayweather's adaptability and superior boxing skills.

Part of the reason why Castillo was able to enjoy the amount of success that he did in the first fight was because of his decision to utilize the jab on the way in. Had he not used that as a means of establishing his punching range, he wouldn't have been able to work his way inside, and the fight wouldn't have been nearly as close as it was. :deal

Castillo also used feints (which people forget that faster fighters still fall for them) and his physical strength to square Mayweater up.

Worth nothing though : Mayweather has evolved since then, both physically and mentally as well at technically.

Howabout we assume that Margarito would of got caught with plaster before the Mayweather fight, and exposed as a C level bum with an awesome chin and one of our sports biggest frauds? (Even earlier than he was)

I'd give it a tentative yes answer. Fighters with good jabs are generally tough to deal with because a fast jab is a hard punch to counter, sets up other punches, and is a very fast counterpunch in itself. Oscar gave Floyd fits with his jab before he got tired and stopped throwing it(and no, Floyd didn't scare him off it, Oscar is simply a stupid fighter at times), and Floyd will take a few rounds at the least to figure out Cotto's jab if Cotto uses it consistently.

All that said, it's not totally necessary to beat Floyd, if you can feint/defend well enough to get inside on him, stay there, and throw short combinations, that will cause Floyd problems too, as Castillo demonstrated. If you have the size and speed to make Floyd come after you(a la Martinez possibly), Floyd is at a disadvantage there as well because he doesn't like to lead. Not too many fighters have that kind of skill set or physical attributes though, so in general I would say you need a jab.

Speed and skills are much more important than any particular punch. Floyd is used to being the fastest gun in town. When he's got competition, the equation changes. That's why Zab, the mental midget, had so much success. That's why someone like SRL would have beat Floyd's ass. That's why Cotto is getting beat badly.

Whatever style a fighter has, if he has mastered that style then what he needs to beat Mayweather is a boxing brain. He needs to out think Mayweather./ or a whole bunch of mother****in luck, cause when a lame gets lucky a real player aint got a chance.

You need SRL as your coach/trainer! :p

And yes, a jab is good. It sets up the overhand right well. The jab will also make him hide behind the shoulder and helps you reset your spacing, and possibly slide to the right to better angle/flank him. Keep him on the defensive with the 1-2, then mix in a long left hook. He wont be in position to easily counter that with his right. The angling also allows the looping overhand right to land on top of the head, though partially guarded by the shoulder. The constant left hooks from the flank negates the right-side duck by Floyd Mayweather, unless he wants to duck into the punch. This is why SRL froze up FMS - his offense negated all defensive position/mitigation his stance usually provides....

Mayweather is unbeatable. Jab, whatever, doesn't matter.
