This is kind of surprising, since it's not normally seen as a vintage perfomance by Ali. Would like to know your reasoning behind this one. (no criticism implied, just curiosity)

 

Ali nearly won evey singal round of that fight. Outside of the toe knockdown, Ali put on a one sided boxing show.

 

Great list...I could never get bored watching any of the fights you listed.

I agree with Ali v. Wepner - it is an underrated performance.

From memory it is after Foreman and before Frazier IIII, so he was still in his purple patch.

What is remarkable is that Ali carries his opponent, who is hopeless but robust, but then elects to knock him out in the 15th, after an hour of fun, by throwing beautifully timed right hands.

Before that it was just points scoring left jabs and an occasional left hook.

Ali's ability to choose when to finish opponents clearly suggests a monumental gulf in class...

PS I can't believe some of the gurus in here have not seen Ali v. Williams. Actually, its probably a good thing - everything else seem **** by comparison.

 

Well Ali can only choose there fall for the most part if they were below the elite level, He fail in his own effort to "Choose" for Joe Fraizer, Doug Jones, and a few others.

I thought Hearns - Benitez was a clinic too.

 

Holmes - Shavers I was a clinic vs a stylistically suited foe, but none the less a great boxing performance.

 

You could argue that Benitez put on a clinic as well ... same with the Leonard bout.

Many punches that appear to land, upon closer inspection were either just slipped or rolled with ... that said, Hearns did impress me in this bout.

 

Totally agree, and i should have actually mentioned it was two faceted. Hearns actually forced Benitez to attempt to up the ante in the latter stages.

 

I submit that there is no man at 147 - 154 lbs that could've outboxed a healthy Hearns ... beaten, outfought, possible, but outboxed? I struggle to think of anyone that I'd bet the house on.
