Geale v pirog hbo august

Watched a fair bit of pirog lately. What i thought as far as a geale fight is concerned...

- pirog doesnt really have a jab. He uses his lead left hand more as a nuisance, range finder. Geale doesnt really need to worry about dealing with a hard, consistent jab from pirog. Actually, one punch geale gets hit a bit with is a straight jab. Advantage geale there.

- pirog loves to dictate a fight and control the pace. He is so methodical in his delivery. He tries to slowly break you down. Geale comes right out of the blocks and goes at a good pace from start to finish. That might upset pirogs rhythm a bit.


- the flip side to the above - i saw some footage where an opponent came at pirog and started
fast. Pirog immediately increased his tempo and matched the guys explosiveness. Thing is, geale is on a higher level and can maintain great technique whilst Fighting at a good pace. Maybe an up- tempo fight against geale messes with pirogs head a bit, especially if pirog hasnt hurt geale after say 6 rounds.

- even if his punch output isnt overly high, pirog puts an insane amount of pressure on his opponents. He has great footwork and quickly adjusts to cut off the ring and stay in range where he is pressuring his opponent. Geale has good angles....he will need everyone of them to upset pirogs rhythm. But he has neat moves and may just be the style to keep pirog from dominating.


Great fight on paper. Looking fwd to it. Pirog is no joke....neither is our boy!!

 

From what i have seen, shaw doesnt over- coach which is a common fault in lots of trainers imo. Technically, his fighters are very sound and are quite disciplined...a real reflection of the grange gym.

No loud, blaring music at grange, no yelling and carrying on....its a great gym to visit.

 

The other thing that should aid geale....his long amateur career where he would have faced lots of euro fighters. Pirog is very very good but his style may not be all that " new" as far as what geale has seen/ hasnt seen.

Pirog isnt a classic euro style, but he obviously has lots of euro traits.

 

No doubt. His punching technique is faultless too. Loves the left uppercut, and he can throw it from range. He has really nailed that punch, geale needs to try and avoid it.

I remember reading an interview with him after he beat jacob on hbo. He really made a point about his ability to adapt and fight all different styles...he said it didnt matter what his opponent brought to the ring, he could adapt and overcome it.

Really interesting to see whether that includes what geale brings.

 

Another thing noticeable in pirogs fights...

A lot of his opponents stood in front of him and right in perfect range for pirog to work the head and body. They got caught in " no mans land" so to speak...not all the way in or all the way out. Pirog was able to hit these guys everywhere...body, up the middle, hooks, the lot.

Of course a lot of it is because of the pressure pirog put on them.

But geale has fast feet and great conditioning where he should be able to keep good distance. If he can get pirog to fight long, it will take away a lot of his rhythm as the body wont be there. And its naturally harder to land.

If you fight pirog in that "caught in between" space, he picks the attack very well and rolls and slips punches very well. I think geale is faster than him....distance and angles is his best bet imo.

Tbh...its the way geale tends to fight for the most part anyway. But its no easy task...this guy puts pressure on his opponents and is a super confident fighter.
