hindsight is 20-20. First of all, it was Cotto's first fight at that weight, he was already a short Welterweight to begin with, he'd just gotten the **** beaten out of him by Pacquiao, arguably lost before that to Clottey, and of course got destroyed by Plasterito. Yuri was taller, and in his previous fight had just beaten highly respected JMW Santos quite convincingly, even scoring a knockdown in the process. Add to that the fact that Yuri is a jew and this was a Top Rank under BOB ARUM, ,with the negotations already strained with Cotto, and it's not really hard to see why people were picking Foreman.
I remember when the fight was announced for yankee stadium, thinking to myself, there is no way cotto is shot enough to lose to yuri-****ing-foreman.
His Santos fight on the Cotto(e)-emmanuel undercard was telling enough. You could see he wasn't ever going to be or beat an elite fighter based off that performance. The signs were all there, but people ignored em or didn't pick up.
Bigger than Cotto (which was significant after Cotto moving to 154 in itself was considered by many a bad move), taller, a good mover, and Manny Pacquiao himself had publicly declined to fight him because they thought the style would be too difficult. Add onto that the fact that Pacquiao's offense made him retreat in a way we had never before seen, and it looked for a lot of people like Cotto was way too worn mentally and physically to compete with a guy like Foreman as his first fight back. I backed Cotto to win due to the apparent difference in sheer skill level, but I was a bit nervous. Once I saw how easily he was controlling the center of the ring, balanced with his feet under him with every punch, and timing the jab with such accuracy, I was reminded that Cotto is elite and Yuri was a good few rungs below that.
Arum was desperate for a jewish star that could produce tons of money and they thought Cotto was done.... they were wrong
they were selling the **** out of Foreman with his Jewish background. You rarely see Jewish world champions in the modern day scene. People saw how bad Cotto did towards the end against Pacquiao, saw Foreman win(if they even paid attention) and did the typical "Guy who lost vs Guy who just won" formula for their picks
I figured Cotto would win by UD, simply because Foreman lacked the power to gain his respect for extended periods of time, or to keep him at bay. Pretty good performance by Cotto, all things considered...And a pretty gutty performance from Foreman, too. :good
I like many was shocked at what a shitty performance Santos put on vs. Foreman, made Foreman look dominating. Jason Litzau vs. Caballero reminded me of this too hahahahahahaha
