To help drill in keeping your hands up as you are training, how many of you physically touch your face/cheeks/chin with your hands? In shadowboxing and the bags for instance. And when sparring, how many physically touch their headgear? Having that whole "hand glued to the headgear" mentality? I'm thinking mostly of the rear hand. Does it help? I know that when I spar, I keep them a couple of inches off, but I still suffer from the common problem of them dropping.
I try to. When I first started shadowboxing and learning how to move, I'd move slowly until my hands were in place to throw the next punch. The first trainer I worked 1 on 1 with would swat me if I dropped my lead hand or didn't bring it back fast enough. As it became more of a habit I started speeding up and spent less time checking myself. It's a process. elbows and balance are my next thing to work on.
i have my rear hand always on my face, so yes, glued to face mentality i have many benefits of it, easier to defend, to parry, roll with punches etc.. but i needed time to make a habit, many trainers yelling
The whole thing, where you see, especially old-time fighters, old fight movies, or even Bruce Lee...Anyway, the guy brushing his nose with the thumb of his rear hand, that started as a reminder to keep that hand home.
Right hand on the cheekbone, left hand on the eyebrow. Chin on the chest. Hands glued to the face. Makes the incoming punches rattle your head less.
