Could Gans cause the same knockout success that Hearns got from Duran? Please be provide in-depth analyses if possible.
I dont think he could. While Gans was undoubtedly an all time great finisher he did not have Hearns's size or physical advantages over Duran. He would also likley fight a more safety first fight getting the early rounds in the bag and then hoping to finish Duran later.
Yet you still have Gans winning, yes? What of the pressure of Duran? I made comparisons with Hearns largely due to Gans' reach and power. However, should he fight cautiously early on, I see Duran carrying those rounds based on workrate alone. What do you think?
I think it is quite possible that Duran puts on enough pressure to take the decision. I think that the longer the fight lasts the less likley that is. Duran would have his work cut out because Gans managed to outpoint some great pressure fighters including Joe Walcott.
I don't think Gans would beat Duran as easily as Hearns personally I don't think any lightweight beats Duran in two rounds. I think this fight is 50/50 depending on how long it is would affected the result. Gans often went 20 rounds and even 42 once also Gans did beat the better fighters at 135lbs. Over 12 I would favour Duran to win most rounds due to work rate and looking for the finish. Over 15 it's a toss up.
There seems to be some confusion regarding how I phrased myself. Even I don't think so highly of Gans as to even remotely imply he could precisely replicate one of the stand-out knockouts in the whole history of the sport of boxing; that happened in a different weight altogether, and thusly to a different Duran. Thinking back on it now, I don't even know why I mentioned Hearns in the first place since Tommy was moving forward while Gans would likely be moving back and away from Duran. However- on the one hand you have Joe Gans, lanky and accurate, with enough power, certainly, to hurt Roberto Duran, on the other, the Hands of Stone with workrate to spare to trouble the very measured Gans- who wins and why? If you think Duran wins, by decision or quick stoppage, either way, please feel free to voice your opinion. This is not strictly a Joe Gans thread. In fact, I didn't mean it to be.
I meant inducing the kind of success that was similar in flow and progression, rather than necessarily length or duration.
Gans did face Battling Nelson, who had a Henry Armstrong like work rate. If Gans got though that, I can imagion Gans lasting and gutting it out with Duran. I dont see Gans stoppiing Duran in 2 rounds of couse. but it would be a war that is 50 50 imo.
I don't see Joe Gans stopping Roberto Duran, it would be more of a technical affair, in which he would be the master of.
I think if you are pikcing Gans it shouldn't be on the strength of him being a ko artist, but it should be on the strength of how he stacks up stylistically. A lot of people seem to wrongfully think that some speed and excessive movement will always do Duran, but what would be better to take into a bout with him would be the ability to box in the centre of the ring, ,aking room for punches in bunches, and aiming to engane Duran consistently in that area of the game. This is how Dejesus did it. Needless to say, you will need to bring quality to the table. Gans ticks all these boxes. Gans had tremendous footwork without being excessively mobile, he could cut off the ring with a step here, a step there and he's in position to unleash hellish hooks and crosses etc. I still go with Duran on the basis of him probably being the most skilled boxer on film, but yeah, if I was to pick Gans it would be for what I see as the right reasons, not because I think he'd lay Duran out.
Gans impresses me more than probably any other fighter of that era, but Duran would have beaten him convincingly.
Hm, interesting match-up. For me there are two main questions to be asked here: 1. Has Gans enough power to make Duran timit? Possible but I doubt it. 2. Can Duran maneuver Gans were he wants him to be to make his pressure and higher workrate count? Possible but not ver often. Quite possible this would turn out to be a stinker. A masterpiece of boxing, setting traps, feinting but with not much action and exchanges.
No. Gans is an old timer and stands no chance whatsoever. Duran destroys him. Even I would beat Gans, and I'm an average amateur.
