Sonny Liston would KO Wladimir Klitschko like he did KO Cleveland Williams

Klit main weapon is his jab, imagin if he was getting out jabbed by listons sledgehammer jab everytime. he would get frustrated and eventually kod. liston tko2

 

Klitschko is 6'6" with an 81" reach and about 240-245 Lbs.

He's been down vs. Sanders (LKOby2), Brewster (LKOby5), and Peter (W12). He was also stopped by Puritty, LKOby11. He has avenged one of the losses, KO6 Brewster and he stopped Peter in their rematch, KO10. He let his big brother avenge the other 2 losses. He avenged one of his brother's losses... W12 Byrd and KO7 Byrd.

Over the past 8 years Klitschko has gone 15-0 (11) overall and 13-0 (10) in HW World Title Fights. During this stretch he has beat Williamson WTD5, Castillo KO4, Peter x2, Byrd x2, Brock KO7, Austin KO2, Brewster, Ibragimov W12, Thompson KO11, Rahman KO7, Chagaev KO9, Chambers KO12, Haye W12, and Mormeck KO4. Not the best resume ever, but it isn't bad especially when you consider he has barely lost a round in over 8 years.

He is nothing like Cleveland Williams.

 

Chuck Wepner who has met Wlad on a couple of occasions, states that Wlad is shorter than him,Wepner is 6' 5".
Liston had a longer reach than Wlad. I think that if Sonny could get past Wlad's jab the Ukrainian would fill his shorts ,and resort to clutching . Liston was good inside Wlad is not. Liston by ko.

 

Wepner is listed at 6'6" and just because Wepner said something doesn't mean it's true. I've said my "member" is longer than Holmes'... and I'm not talking about Larry! Also, I don't believe that Liston had an 84" reach... even if he did he was 5 or 6" shorter than Wlad... when you have to punch up, it matters. In all honesty, Wepner didn't look much shorter than Andre The Giant when they stood next to each other in the ring... but Wepner ain't no 7 footer. Sure, Andre probably wasn't 7'5" but he was at least close to 7'.

Liston has a chance, I never said he didn't, but comparing Wlad to Cleveland Williams is just crazy.

 

We're talking about two ultra elite heavies Liston and Klitschko. Obviously, an outcome either way is possible. The only argument which is weak is an absolute on either side. I think Wlad's faster jab and great strength could control distance enough, and he could absorb Liston's punches well enough when Liston broke the distance, to win a decision or even maybe take Liston out late. However, I'm not sure how much I would bet on it.

 

very logical and objective stance. should be taken for more of these fantasy fights to be honet.

personally i think mcvey is on to something when he says IF liston can outjab and bust up wlad consistently, the fight would go he way quickly. in that sense it may be similar to mercer/lewis, when lewis had that ramrod jab shoved down his throat for long stretches. he simply couldn't get his offense working consistently

First, this is sort of like arguing because Lennox Lewis was the best heavyweight in the world in the early 21st century, and better than any American, British heavyweights were always better than American heavyweights. I think even the most rabid British fan might have some doubts about that.

Did not fight Cuban expat--this is just ignorant, as Cuban fighters were common prior to Castro. The old timer subject of this thread, Sonny Liston, ko'd two of them, Nino Valdes and Julio Mederos. Louis and Walcott also defeated Omelio Agramonte, the Cuban heavy champ. Cuban heavies were rarely all that good, but in lighter weights, there were many Cuban champions and top men, such as Gavilan.

Did not fight Russian or eastern Europeans--Two problems here. You can't fight what isn't there. But it is also wrong, as Americans did fight Russians and eastern Europeans in the olympics.

1964--Joe Frazier defeated Vadim Yemelyanov of USSR in semi-final-ko 2

1968--George Foreman defeated Ionis Chepulis of USSR for gold medal-ko 2.

The 1952 olympic heavyweight champion was Ed Sanders who defeated Ingo Johansson, and in 1960 it was Francesco DiPiccoli who ko'd a South African.

*Teofilo Stevenson was a prospect who might have been a force in pro boxing, but as for the eastern European and Russians, extrapolating backwards from their current success is no more or less convincing than assuming Americans no longer dominate because they have simply abandoned the sport.

**Frankly, black Africans still haven't done enough at heavyweight to get excited. Black Africans were fighting at top level from WWII on-Hogan Bassey and Dick Tiger becoming champions, but they never made a splash at heavyweight.

I'm no Klit hater,I respect both but I honestly think Liston would frighten the **** out of Wlad.
Wlad is ultra cautious he even was against Haye,he never opens up until he knows the other guy is spent,and that is even the most mediocre of opposition.
This size thing is an obsession with some,but Liston was a big guy,**** the weight difference there wouldn't be much difference here in strength and Liston actually outreaches Wlad by 2 or 3 inches.
