NADER Hamdan plans to become the second Australian in 12 months to win a world title in Germany after securing a shock championship bout against Robert Stieglitz for next week. The last-minute, six-figure deal was agreed upon yesterday after WBO champion Stieglitz's initial opponent, George Groves, was forced to pull out due to injury. At 38, and with a week's notice, Hamdan will be a heavy underdog against an opponent rated among the world's top four super-middleweights. "That doesn't bother me, I've always been an underdog," said Hamdan, who flies to Germany tomorrow to try to emulate Daniel Geale's feat when he beat Sebastien Sylvester last year. "This means everything. I won't get another opportunity again." ...
Nice surprise opportunity for Nader...but deserved? The positive for me is that it has paved the way for two hungry contenders to face off in Caparello and Berridge, rather than a contender (Caparello) vs a gatekeeper (Nader). Don't get me wrong. Good luck Nader, but I won't be watching it and these sort of match ups detract from the sport.
To say he stands any chance in Germany is a longshot IMO. A KO is his only chance Having shaw in geales corner would have helped with his SD win. Imagine the **** he would have kicked if sylvester got the UD
Good luck to him, deserved??? Why not, he's given some good fights, best of luck Nader, would be good to bring another belt home
Wishing him all the very best, but don't like his chances. However, I don't mind bit of egg on my face from time to time. Not so sure about reported 6 figure payday......5 at best I reckon.
The questioning how deserved it is has nothing to do with Nader but just my gripe with the top 15 voluntary title defence option available to champions. Feel for the blokes with better rankings that get over looked. Cherry picking from the rankings goes on far too much in the defence of titles. The fairy tale is set up, but has anyone ever recalled a no.15 or 14 etc, taking home a belt in these fights? Some of you hard corers out there might know of one or two.
I reckon about 50k. Maybe not even that, given he's rated #15 ? Mind you, short notice challengers do have an advantage in purse negotiations.
