I definately do think warren holds pretty much all of the blame for holding Joe back but Loyalty comes with a price I suppose. We all keep saying about warren this and warren that so lets look at how Joe has managed to maintain his reign through out his career and in getting to where he is right now, and thats why he's at the very top of the tree. Joe Calzaghe has proved and will carry on proving until he does finally retire, that he is a p4p ATG. He will beat the best out there today as he would've done back then given the opportunity. With the 2 big guns at that time avoiding him like plague, Calzaghe had to wait until the young fighters coming up made enough of a name to be classed as worthy opponents. To be able to persivere and stay at the top for has long as he has demands respect, Joe's legacy will be cemented long before the year is through.
Great post. I can't truthfully say that's how the conversation would go -- I know a fair bit about Joe Calzaghe -- but that made me laugh. Point taken, D.
Calzaghe is a great fighter, he has great skills. My thing is that he missed so many shots at big fights in the 1990's that it will really hurt his place in history. When you think of all the great fighters in and around his weight class during his career you would think that he would have been able to get more big fights then Eubank and Hopkins 11 years apart. Im not going into who ducked who but I will say that fight were out there..Mega fights with Jones, DM, Ottke. Fights that would have earned him some major props with Woods, Eastman, rematch with Reid and a fight with Antwon Echols after Joe himself was at the fight between Echols and Brewer and said that he would fight the winner which was Echols only to fight the LOSER Brewer. Big fights that can still be made with Dawson, Erdei, Bute. And I know for a fact that there are two big fights that Calzaghe turned down or pulled out of and that was with Johnson after his wins over jones and tarver. And a fight with Jones in which Warren called the offer to fight the then p4p king Jones peanuts. I think that Joes place in history really hangs on the outcome of his fight with Hopkins. If he loses I really think that his career ranking outside of the UK will be pretty bad. People will say "See I told you he fought nothing but bums" which I agree and disagree with. Early on It seemed that Joe was only interested in taking fights that were gimmes IE Veit TWICE, and a couple of guys that only thier parents knew who they were in Pudwell, Mcintire, Jimenez. But of late it seems that Joes is looking to make a place high on the all times lists. Taking on fights that are close to 50/50 going in. I just dont know it the late push will be enough, and he sure cant afford to lose at this point.
He had a lot of problems with his hands for a while and was not satisfied with his promoter. I like what he is doing now.
I would like to believe that but after he pulled out of the fight with Johnson he fought Veit a mere two weeks after the date set with Johnson, so his hand couldnt have been that bad. I know that Joe has had some injures and some personal problems but who hasnt???
Whatever, I am just glad he is doing so much now, better late than never. He sure is talented and trains hard, so I have to respect that.
well basically what your saying is that rocky maricano is remeberd for he fought not for his record ask any person what marciano will always be rememeberd for and evreyone will say that he was the only person to go retired unbeaten with 49 wins his record. even still look at marcianos resume look at how many fighters he fought that were completly out of his league,
Errr.. how is it like that?!! If Hopkins and Jones ducked Joe in their primes, Then why the hell is Joe getting the bitter end of it?! For not pursuing or trying hard enough?? That's hilarious! but i get the point..Quite similar to JMM, he's been avoided for years by MAB, EM et.al. and when he finally did (with MAB), he won (contested by some)..still he's not going to get the recognition he deserves. (He would've lost back then IMO..)
Calzaghe can't fight Dawson because he is scheduled for two matches, one against Johnson in April, and the other against Adrian Diaconu in July. (Thats if Diaconu wins his interim matchup on March 29) Dawson COULD fight Calzaghe after his match with Johnson, but he would be stripped of his WBC belt, which would make him look bad, and besides Calzaghe wants to fight a top LHW with a belt. There would be no point in fighting Dawson if he doesn't have his WBC belt.
I seriously doubt Jones ever ducked Calzaghe. It just wasn't a logical fight to make as they were a couple of years apart with regards to their careers. Jones was at LH doing his thing while Calzaghe was at 168. Had Calzaghe of moved up and lost to Jones (while RJJ was in his prime), people would of criticised Jones for fighting "a bum". Calzaghe should/could of had names like Beyer, Ottke, Collins, Johnson, Hopkins (already) Echols and such on his resume already.
Ottke!!? You do understand that Ottke could be knocked out in every round, rise from the dead, get knocked out cold again, then still win on points? Not worth it. The only way Joe should have fought Ottke is on neutral ground. I think those fights had to be taken, otherwise Joe would have been stripped.
