Lennox Lewis (of 1998) vs Wladimir Klitschko (of 2009)

I suppose his most testing fight (that he won) would be his first fight against Sam Peter. Wasn't exactly a toe to toe war, but he was knocked down three times over the course of the fight and had to show a bit of guts and composure to get the win.

Of his losses two of them follow a similar pattern: Wlad dominating, gassing, getting his ass beat. I don't know if they really tell us that much at this point in time. The Sanders loss is the only one where he was totally outclassed and beaten down from the opening round. Could Lewis emulate what Sanders did? Very possibly, though stylistically and physically they were different. Would Wlad succumb in the same way? Hard to say.

 

Lewis liked to bomb out superheavyweights early.
Wlad could outclass Lewis technically but I doubt it.

Hard to say. Whomever lands their best stuff early would likely win. I do think Wlad of 2009 would defeat the Lewis who played it safe vs. Holyfield.

I would also say the Lewis who went after Ruddock or Golota would beat Wlad.

Wlad looks good when he can keep you on the end of his jab and control the tempo of the fight. From that, he will hook off the jab and drop the right hand, and tie up in close.

If Lewis is lazy and falls into the habit of trading jabs, this could be a close fight. If there was one flaw in Lewis' armour, it was that like all big hitters, he started to rely on the big punch too much.
It was a mistake I felt he made against Vitali, where he allowed himself to get clearly outboxed while looking for the big shots.

If Lewis starts looking for Wlad's chin with big shots and neglects the fundamental boxing skills he possessed, it could get tricky, since Wlad does have genuine knockout power and sets up his shots well.

So for me, Lewis would have to be patiently aggressive, and above all things, control the centre of the ring. He can't allow Wlad to get into his comfort zone and play the jab/grab game.

Neither has much of an inside game (It could be argued that Wlad doesn't have one at all) but Lewis' huge uppercut inside is a weapon that he'd need to exploit. I believe at some point he will invariably bring it to the party, and it would be interesting to see how Wlad responds to that.

I favour Lewis...more proven against better fighters...but he can't afford to get lazy in there.

but I think Lewis must be viewed as the favorite here.

However, I think Wlad has a better shot than the wide gap in voting indicates.
