martinez wins. probably by stoppage at 154. Mayweather won't take this fight. Not cos he's scared. But legacy fights are nowhere near as important to him as making sure he's healthy at the end of his career and can enjoy his money. He's got t near the end of his career with a lot of money in the bank and his health in tact. I don't see him risking it against any fighter where he's not at least a 5 to 1 favourite.
I disagree. I think his speed would be a huge factor. IE, if he didn't have his speed, he would have no chance. That's not saying a slow guy can't win. A slow, durable, big puncher, with excellent stamina, and SIZE can beat Mayweather, but Martinez doesn't fit that description. That's Angulo. Anyway, Martinez' speed, timing, and reach will allow him an opportunity to counter Floyd when Floyd is most vulnerable...when he is throwing. It will be difficult for Martinez to time Floyd though because of Floyd's ability to move his body so quickly, but if he does manage to get some good shots in, he very well could hurt Floyd and take him out. This is a guy that routinely knocks out middleweights.
Timing is what opens the doors to land on Mayweather not speed. Hatton was faster than given credit for, but didn't have the timing to land on Mayweather. You're correct, Mayweather is most vulnerable when he throws. Cotto has always had brilliant timing, so he was able to factor Floyd's movements and adjust his punching rythm. Martinez doesn't possess that same sort of intelligence in my eyes. There's a huge difference between timing Matthew Macklin, and Floyd Mayweather Junior. Martinez would need to circle, pump his jab in two's and three's and go from there IMO.
I think Martinez could out-jab Floyd and out-box him. If they fought on the inside, though, I don't know who would get the better of it. Floyd's more skilled there, but Martinez would be stronger. Martinez would also be able to hurt Floyd, should he land cleanly. He should be able to work the body well, too.
Mayweather would have no trouble outboxing Martinez. The only issue is Martinez's power but he'd have such little success against Mayweather that it's not really a factor. His whole style is suited to being a smaller guy being faster than bigger opponents. He doesn't have the qualities to use his bigger size to his advantage. Someone like Kirkland, who Martinez would destroy, has a bigger chance against Mayweather. Styles make fights and in this fight, Martinez's style hurts his chances. Mayweather easy UD. Probably 10-2 or something like that. An easier fight than against Cotto.
I think Floyd takes the close decision BUT! Forget physical size, Martinez has a very fast and long jab he can time really well, and can box from distance, so Floyd would need to cut Maravilla down which would be of his unliking. Also, pinning Floyd to the ropes, he could bombard Floyd's guard far enough not to get countered. Martinez has speed, power, reach and a hell lot of ring IQ to match Floyd's speed, technical brilliance and elite defense. In the end, I see a very close competitive fight favoring PBF officially, with some debate regarding who really won.
Martinez is faster, and has better timing than Cotto. Sergio also has better power than Cotto in my opinion. If Cotto was able to land on Mayweather, you best believe Sergio will nail Floyd as well but probably cleaner and harder. Im sure Sergio was licking his chops looking at how Cotto was making Floyd work in every round. The question is, how healthy can Sergio make 154? I think he shouldn't have a problem. Win, loose, or draw one will have to give Mayweather every once of credit if he does take on Maravilla. This southpaw is not someone to sleep on or take lightly. Floyd can win but it will be a tough one.
DiBella claims Martinez was near 154lbs last fight Friday and had meals and drinks before weigh-in. He stayed lower to have a feel how comfortably he can make 54 if opportunity comes, he even said he's ready to go as low at 150lbs, so he should be fine at 154.
168 vs. Williams, 170 vs. Dzinziruk, and 165 vs. Barker. They didn't do fight night weights for Macklin since the New York commission doesn't allow it. DiBella had said earlier they'd agree to come in no heavier than Ortiz was vs. Mayweather at 164.
