I think he has regressed as a boxer.

He looked great in the Lynes and Harrison fights, but I don't think he has ever been able to reach that level of performance again. It's easy to say that it is down to him stepping up in level, but even against Rasilla and Lauri, sub-standard opponents in comparison to someone like the aforementioned Lynes, he didn't sparkle like before.

He does still have something to offer on the domestic/European stage, but it's whether he has the ambition to do so.

maybe part of the reason is he caught lynnes at the right time, its only recently lynnes started turning things around a bit, before that he was losing to everyone.

McCloskey's defence was and is reflex based, it was only a matter of time before that started to wander, if you insistent of fighting with your hands by your side your asking to be hit bang on the chen.
Tweak his style a bit, get him to higher his guard and cover up and he can still continue at a reasonably good level.

Lynes was on a decent run of form at the time, with both losses in between the McCloskey fight being controversial. McCloskey stepped in with a week's notice for the fight, as well.

Could be a good top-level gatekeeper himself. Depends what he wants out of the game I guess. If he wants money, that could be his best route. It also has the bonus that one or two unexpected wins and you're relevant again (...as Corley has proven).

If he doesn't want such hard fights/wants to finish with an impressive looking but more padded record, then back to british/Euro level. As has been said, no disgrace at all in reaching that level.

Boxing is all about levels, and i think we have found his, no shame being a British / European class fighter. How many of us would dream about being at that level....

  10. I wouldn't be surprised if he did, personally.

Like Kos said, he's gone backwards since the win over Lynes, he's never really improved the way he looked capable of doing at one point, which is unfortunate.

Realistically there aren't all that many options for him unless he's willing to go back to the hard slog of domestic matches, who'll typically be up and comers too.

Wouldn't surprise me if the fight with Woodhouse came back around, I think Curtis would fancy it too.

Depends what his money situation is. I think himself and the wife still run that Spar shop in Dungiven. I hope he makes a decent living with the shop. If money is tight, try and cash out. Prescott and Lauri both were very eager for rematches.

There was something not right with Lynes head that night, it was a completely bizarre finish

Of course not. It's not all about world title or retire.

If you're a true fighter, a true warrior that loves the sport, you don't go out like that. McCloskey's had what...2 tough fights including this one. Theres plenty left in him. Maybe they have to reassess their goals but retirement ought not to be in the equation.
