I mean I know he was never knocked down but he took some of the worst beatings I've ever seen both physically and mentally and he still seems fine [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hcVyEIJm05s&feature=plcp[/ame]
croatian roots :bbb that doesnt mean anything, why should he show signs of damage? look at jake lamotta, he is 90 years old and he is more vital than anybody i know older than 80 (who never did boxing) [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7io6DscF3c[/ame]
It's mostly the "iron chinned warriors" that suffer the most braindamage during their careers. George is just the exception that confirms the rule.
No slurring in his speach at all and sounds perfectly lucid its really nice to see that he can enjoy his retirement in health. Honestly theres multiple theories floating about, some say that people that do get knocked down/out frequently due to the multiple short circuits in their brain get damaged. But than you have people like Toney who has a granite chin who sounds absolutely dreadful. Other side of the spectrum you have someone like Tex Cobb who took some of the worst beatings ive seen any fighter take and he did this several times and he went on to graduate from college in his late 50s and sounds perfectly fine. Honestly i think its just genetics and a good bit of luck.
Chuvalo was recently featured on Our Lady Peaces' album that came out a little while back. Apparently him and the band have become really close friends and they've basically said he's an inspiration.
george chuvalo is just one tough man. his memory is great, his speach perfect, he's an interesting, articule guy who shows no signs of damage at all. then there's fighters like meldrick taylor and terry norris. hard to figure it out is'nt it?
Basilio and Fullmer are two others who took a lot of punishment and they are still looking strong for their age.
I have been thinking about this theory. When you look at Sergio Martinez you´d think that he is in his prime and he actually might be. Then you look at Mayweather who is a bit younger but obviously is past his prime. Then you have Pacquiao who has been knocked out, been in many wars and though fights yet still shows amazing speed, power and reflexes.
It's such a massive advantage to have a good chin. If Wlad had Chuvalo's chin he'd be 60-0. Some fighters clearly have elevated status just by having a good beard. Chisora is probably the best example of a current fighter who gets by primarily on his granite chin. Not only does it enable you to walk through punches to land your own shots, but gives you the oppertunity to take a breather if you're spent, while just absorbing punishment. Impressive dude Chuvalo. Definately one of the more likeable boxing personalities.
He has but if you see recent interviews its just terrible, its a huge difference to interviews even 4 years ago. Its slurred, incoherent, very slow. Last few years his defense is nowhere near what it was and he is taking huge bombs for 12 rounds. Even a Holyfield whos speech is getting slowly worse is sounding better than Toney currently.
