well what if Ward were to lose

also Calzaghe was never graced with such an opportunity of a unification tournament

I think Ward has a way to go to surpass Joe, beating Dawson and Bute would definitely raise the stock

He is the most accomplished SMW of all time. That's not saying much but the division is strong currently so it's not a knock on Ward. For some perspective Holyfield is the most accomplished Cruiser of all time and the division was practically brand new when he fought there and he is still throwing punches.

He's well on the path to being the greatest SMW IMO. By the time he's hung them up he well might be.

even if you consider calzaghe the most accomplished at 168, his best wins were vs eubank, lacy and kessler at that weight. if ward beats dawson at 168, he clearly passes joe. super six winner and wins over kessler, froch and dawson would trump anything that joe did.

That's the best time to evaluate fighter's career :good

But in some cases the last chapter can be ugly. I wonder how we'll be remembering RJJ in years to come if he keeps fighting?

This thread is going nowhere... SOG :patsch can't sell a show by himself.
Jones had prestige and panache. Something SOG will never have.

I was a huge RJJ fan. But is 'greatest' measured in prestige and panache? Or by who you beat?

Ward will never match Roy for prestige and panache. But he may assemble a better CV at SMW by the time he's done.

If he clears out Bute after beating Dawson he will be in the discussion. After all, he won an international tournament and will have beaten the only other active fighter on his level, all while prime or very near prime.

Ward will have a "took on the best in the world" reputation while Joe will always have the "bums and old men" reputation. Think of the reputations what you will, but those are accurate.

I think talent wise Jones Jnr will not be surpassed but accomplishment wise Ward will go on to be the best. Calzaghe always seems to get a rough ride, he did fight mostly in his own country as most world champions do (TERMS and MONEY) yet the bums and old men is a little unfair as he was past it himself fighting Jones Jnr and was a farewell fight. Hopkins has only helped Joe's cause with his accomplishments after there fight. Oh and at the time Kessler was number 2 and he fought and beat him and Lacy was ranked 3 at the time they fought and beat him. So is what you say really accurate.

If he comes to outwork Dawson clearly and if Bute goes through all the process of beating the Super Sx main names such as Froch abd Kessler in their backyards and then meet Ward to be outworked too, in my opinion, yes, Ward would be the greatest SMW of this era.
