People tend to only remember the good parts of yesteryear. You remember your favorite song from jr. high really easily, but the songs that filled the airwaves while you waited for it to play have faded from memory. The same thing happens with fighters, we only remember the great ones, so the current era seems inferior. Nothing is what it used to be, particularly once you hit your 30s or 40s.
Plus you are comparing current boxers to the past 100+ years of boxers. There is a chance that the current boxer is the greatest of all time...but much more likely you will be able find a few greater ones in the hundreds, if not thousands, that have come before. (all depending on how you define "great")
Right on the Diaz issue, but I'm just saying 135-140 Pac is better than 126-130 Pac. He's not really at a physical disadvantage there either, so that seems the best place to match him. He could shock a few great Featherweights or Jr. Lightweights and would be highly competitive with most, but he's likely to do better about 10lbs north as I think his technical evolution didn't really peak until his final days at 130 and up. For instance, at 130 I'd favor Arguello over Pac, but at 140 I'd favor Pac over Pryor (both fights would be great, of course).
Another reason why Pacquiao and Mayweather constantly come up short in mythical matchups is that they are so often matched up with naturally larger fighters. They happen to compete at 147 now (although Floyd has had two JMW bouts), but they started lower and peaked at lower divisions. Then people match them up with ALL-TIME GREATS who started off at WW like Leonard and Hearns, or the consensus GOAT in Robinson who was also one of the greatest middleweight. Of course they are going to be picked against. I pick Floyd over greats of lower divisions like Arguello, Nelson, him versus Chavez at 140 is a hell of a matchup, but at WW he (and Manny) is better off being matched up against the likes of Curry, Quartey, Starling...not SRL or Hearns.
I see Pac struggling immensely with the best at 135, H2H. Delahoya Mosley Whitaker Duran Chavez Mayweather Williams Those would have been a rough go and I don't think I'd favour him over any of those guys.
I can see what you're saying there about the weights but if they did fight a lot of the lower weight class guys back in the day, both Pacquiao & Mayweather wouldn't have been able to make weight in those lower divisions because of same day weigh ins. So it's unfair to compare them to guys in certain divisions because they would so much naturally bigger and probably not competing in that division under the conditions of the older fighter's era. Obviously this point only applies to guys who had to put up with same day weigh ins.
He'd do fine against DLH, Mosley, and Floyd as I see it, and he'd at least have his moments with the others, but yeah, he'd have hell with a lot of them. Lightweight's arguably the most historically stacked division there is, but he's a better fighter around that weight than below it IMO. At 126, I'd favor Pep, Armstrong, Sanchez, Saddler, Arguello, Saldivar, and so on. For the newer divisions, he's likely to do better against the field at 140 than 130, at least that's my view of it. Overall though, Pac's one of those odd fighters who'd do really well in a lot of divisions but is never really coming close to beating the very best in any. They're a rare bunch, and it can be difficult to rate them H2H. He might lose to Jeff Fenech at 122 but beat Donald Curry at 147, and what the hell are you supposed to make of that?
I think Pac would get creamed by Delahoya mosley and mayweather at 135. That is olympic technique and power we are talking about against pac who was still a work in progress. The body work of Mosley at 135? It would rip Pacman in half. He'd do a lot better against the older ATGs at 135 like Beau Jack, Bob Montgomery, maybe Lew Jenkins, etc.
nigg@ get Johnson out your avatar. How you going to try and clown Greb but have Johnson in your av? No need to try and hide that Floyd love you got.
