Curious how many of you guys training drink or smoke.

I'm talking alcohol/tobacco/weed. Personally, I've managed to be sober for the past 3 months, and my training has really taken off.

I'm going 6 days a week now, and feel better than ever, but I turned 21 recently and it is getting insanely difficult to hang around any of my friends.

All everyone wants to do is go get wasted on the weekends, get high, hit the hookah lounge, etc. It almost seems impossible to do anything else, and if I resist its like "Well 20flood, wtf do you want to do then?". Its gotten to where I don't even hang out with anyone anymore, I just train and go home and read or work.

Idk, am I being a bit too stiff about this? "Wasting my youth" as they say? Do you guys partake in the occasional night out drinking, smoke a little here and there? Or is it best to lay off completely?

I'm not trying to turn this into a career, but hell I'm not that bad, and I'd love to fight on the amateur level at least.

haha if you go to the maing page and click page 2, i have posted a thread with the exact same question. im in the same boat, i dont even go ou anymore becaue it hinders my training, foudn it really hard but my training ha also taking off. at the end of the day you have to make sacrifices for the things you want, and when you grw up and get bored of going out and getting wasted all the time. youll wish you did it years ago. thats how im looking at it but yeah keep your friends in mind but do something more soberish. its weird i know. but i also smoke ***s everyday have stopped drinking all together for a while now...

Just get a good girl and you will never need to go out, and you can focus on training more.
I was a competitive BB from 19-21 but from 14 on I trained hard and dieted so never went to house parties or dances, never drank or got high. It wasn't till I had a bad injury that prevented me from competing again at 22 that I went nuts with partying. That lasted till my early 30s. The sick part is thinkin of all the blown money.

On occasions I'll drink a little. Booze will still be there when I'm done with boxing (probably) so I have no need to drink all the time.

Haha Macco totally missed that thread, wow. Yeah I used to smoke almost everyday, but now when I'm 6 rounds deep w/ more to go and my arms feel like lead, and my lungs are on fire, it gets harder and harder to justify it.

Boxing is just too damn hard lol, other sports it was never an issue.

Interesting you say that flex I actually thought that myself about the girl part, but its not happening right now. I guess I'll see.

You could try finding people who share the same sort of interests as you outside of training, whatever it is, just not smoking/drinking.

I smoke.. I don't drink.. I got drunk way bad when I was younger more then a few times and I lost all urge to ever do it again.. at least with any kind of regularity.

Sometimes I'll smoke before I go work out; helps me get in touch with my Slick White American.

Weed can help your training by reducing pain and relaxing you.

Alcohol-- need to cut loose now and then. Not before fights, obviously.

A lot of top guys got destroyed by alcohol like Pavlik.

Many more will use cocaine after retirement like Tyson, Calzaghe, Bruno, Hatton and a bunch of others I forgot (or never made news). Boxing itself is a drug.

it depends on you. But the fact that you said once you stopped your training took off means that you probably should not be doing these things. However ricardo mayorga claimed to have smoked up to 3 packs a day while training and he made it far. it all depends on you and how far you want to go. If you want to be a good amateur have a bunch of fights do well in some tournaments, but not plan on going anywhere from there than of course you can drink and smoke a little bit. not always but the occasional smoke or drink probably won't affect you to adversely(some people it might tho you might be one of them), but if you are trying to be a a GREAT amateur and have a shot at going pro then you most likely CAN NOT drink and smoke unless its a real real real real rare occasion

If it wasn't for drinking , etc...I'd have won, between 1982 and 1998, every title between junior middle and cruiser, inclusive. At least that's how I see it!

As a trainer I never trained boxers who drank and smoked for obvious reasons. If you want something bad enough you need to be committed and make sacrifices. Too many experiences in the past with those that did, (drink/smoke) partying all night, alcohol on their breath at training, unfit, breathing issues and the list goes on...Boxer looks bad, I look bad! My interest has always been in those boys/girls who want it bad enough, otherwise I don't waste my time!
