How strange was that to hear from Steward, knowing what he' has told Wlad in the past? I think Steward must have not seen Ibrag as much of a risk to jump on and to go after, whereas Wlad was the one in the ring, and he apparently did see Ibnag's stouth paw stance, and fast left hand powershots as a risk, all the way to the end of the fight. Strange to see Steward come across as so urgent for the KO, in a fight that Wlad was easily dominating and coasting to a sure win. Knock him out.........If you go 12 rounds with this guy, it won't be good.......... was a quote by Steward late in the fight.....:blood I think Steward seemed very concerned with making a dramatic, brutal highlight reel clip win in order to help establish Wlad as THE man at heavy, and maybe didn't see Ibrag as a threatening counterpuncher, whereas Wlad apparently did see him that way.
it was unusual in the sense that any trainer will take a guarunteed win, especially in a unification bout. why put himself at risk? marketing I guess.
I posted THIS in a simalr thread: "Manny was remembering the last time he had a heavyweight fighter fighting a unification bout in the Garden. That fighter seemingly won a lopsided victory by keeping an ovematched oponent at the end of a jab. The (corrupt) judges did not see it that way... that fighters name: Lennox Lewis. Manny likes knockouts. It keeps the results certain, it keeps the fans happy, and it means more money in the future." It's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Yes, but at the same time, he is the voice of reason, and he also realizes that a thrown and missed right hand can cause Wlad to become off balance, and leave him very suseptible to a counter by the fast Ibrag, thereby risking a certian win. But I agreed with what Steward was saying, and a heavyweight power puncher like Klit should have been more aggressive, seeing as how this fight was such a high profile fight. But I would think that Steward would have been a bit more cautious, given how he told Wlad to forget about power, go for speed when he in against PEter.. I realize that Peter has a more rescpetable shot than Ibragimov, but still, Ibragimov is much faster and is a lefty, as well.
i really feel that towards the end of the fight, klitschko could have KO'd him at any point as long as he went after him. Whenever he did catch him with a couple shots sultan looked like he was about to be finished. I think it was round 9 or 10 when Wlad turned it up and rocked him with a few good shots just seconds before the bell and it seemed like he certainly would have KO'd him right there
That 12th round was what disappointing. Sultan was finally hurt going into that round and it should have been the time for Wlad to go on a tear. Hell, Manny was demanding it! He should have, rather than let his deep-seated fear of a Corrie Sanders repeat get the best of him. That, and he needs to tell his brother to just stay retired. Vitali's hands are brittle and he should accept that. He'll never own another title.
I think you're exactly right. With a much increased media spotlight on Wladimir, Manny wanted him to get a nice big knockout to look great. Notice that he was perfectly calm through the first few rounds despite Wlad almost never firing his right, because Manny seemed to be expecting him to collect a wear-down knockout around the 8th or 9th or something. When that didn't come, and the closer they were getting to going the full 12, the more agitated Manny was getting. Considering he'd put over Wlad's knockout power and ability beforehand, no doubt in my mind that a knockout was just what he wanted. As you say, Wlad thought otherwise.
A guy like Wlad has all the physical tools to dominate and hurt his opponent. I mean it's all good just winning, but for a heavyweight unification bout? with everyone watching? and for a guy like Wlad, in his prime, so big, so strong...doesn't help his stature at all. Hopefully he shows some more attacking prowess in his next fight.
What I didn´t like about last nights fight is the fact that we saw a fighter in Ibragimov that didn´t believe in his chances to pull off the win. Peter, Brock and even Byrd had some sort of gameplan coming into their respective fights against Wlad. They were actually trying to stand up to him and bang it out at times. Sure, the all lost, but at least they gave a showing that made you believe they actually thought they had a chance to win. Now, Austin and Ibragimov had obviously watched to many replays of the Sanders debacle, not realising they neither had the physical abilities nor the styles to come even close. The worst that can happen is that we see Wlad involved in more fights with guys that honestly believe its enough to put everything on the "Wlad-has such-a-shaky-chin"-card without realizing that this is just a very theoretical chance and is very likely to let you down once you are in the ring with him. Almost no one will argue that we saw a pretty boring fight yesterday, but please don't forget: in any martial arts , you´ll only look as good as your opponent allows you to. Apart from that: a late knock out (which was the most likely outcome for me before the fight) wouldn't have helped much either, the fight just wasn´t competitive at all.
completely agree. sultan just looked as though he accepted early on that he could not win the fight. i was really just waiting for him to go to his corner and not come back out
Yes, amongst the flak Wlad is taking it's well worth pointing out that Sultan brought a shameful lack of substance to the fight. After the performances against Briggs and Evander he was getting labelled as a guy that liked to fight on the outside and that would be silly against Wlad, me included in the people that thought that way. The guys that backed him made assurances that he wouldn't do that this time and would look to get inside and fire away and so on. Instead, Sultan did exactly the same thing as he did against Briggs and Evander, and ate jabs all night long. He had no plan B, and his plan A wasn't much cop in the first place so he got nowhere fast. First Liakhovich, now Sultan have disappointed me with their lacklustre efforts recently. As so often has been the case, a jab can still be the most powerful weapon in boxing!
The point with unification is not the belt, it is the elimination of uncertainty surrounding the question: "Who's No.1" There is no point unifying, adding a worthless WBO strap, if you do it in a way that leaves fans wondering. Why are we asking for a unification, because we want to be able to say, this is the man... We'll after tonight, we are left with the unsatisfying situation of knowing that we have a No.1, but that he's a gunshy fighter. Remember the way Tyson unified? Even Lennox!
