Luis Ortiz is better than Chisora, Arreola, Pulev and Mitchell

Dwyer is wrong in stating that Ortiz won the gold medal in the 2005 World Championships. In truth, the Cubans won the gold medal that year in team championships, and Ortiz was a member of that particular team. I'm pretty certain he was beaten at least once in that very same team championship. Big difference from what Dwyer says.

 

Overall, I'd say that Ortiz bears some close watching. It's entirely possible that he might beat Seth Mitchell. Ortiz is definitely a hot prospect.

But I don't think Ortiz can hang with Pulev. Pulev is even bigger than Ortiz, and is no less athletic. Chisora would probably be too much for Ortiz too.

 

We shouldn't overlook that Ortiz was floored by Aaron Lyons last year. I heard that Ortiz's best shots didn't make much of an impression on Lyons either. Ultimately the fight was stopped in the 8th only because Lyons was cut.

The upside to Ortiz is that he's fluid, fast, has respectable (not great) power, possesses good moves, can jab or box, and is big. He puts his punches together nicely, and can break a guy down with his body shots. Physically, Ortiz looks like Riddick Bowe, but he doesn't really fight like him (Bowe was much stronger and more dangerous).

For now, the most serious knock on Ortiz is that he hasn't yet shown his stuff against a top-25 opponent. We need to see Ortiz against the level opponent before we really know what we're dealing with.

 

The Ustinov fight is interesting. Ustinov is a big but flawed fighter who may prove very beatable against Ortiz. One puzzling thing about this fight is that it will most likely take place in Europe, Ustinov's stomping grounds. Maybe Ortiz's WBA rep will arrange all neutral officials for the fight, though.

 

Other than both K brothers anybody can beat anybody at the HW division.I havent seen anything special in Ortiz so far,but woudnt surprise me if he beats the names mentioned by OP.

Its a little surprise Luis Ortiz doing so good in the pro-ranks.
Back in Cuba he was losing his position as one of the best heavies.
Yuniesky Gonzalez (8-0) now fighing in Miami as a cruiser defeated him in the cuban championship.
But many indications he do impress and really serious
That is not the case with Yuniesky Gonzalez who like to party

 

Ortiz? Never heard of this guy. Can't be too special.

 

Who has Ortiz beaten exactly? ancient shot to pieces Bert Cooper? Zach Page? those are the only names I recognize on his record, and they aren't good either! This guy has faced a worse collection of stiffs than even Wilder, how he he rated at all? He hasn't faced anybody in the top 150!

 

He's 34 already, and hasn't done shite.

I don't understand the hype, personally.. but we'll see...

 

Luis Ortiz needs to fight a live opponent.

His opposition has been even worse than Wilder's. Among his past five opponents were:

a guy with a 1-2 record

a boxer in his pro debut

a boxer who had 10 losses and a NC in his past 11 fights (the NC was because he fell out of the ring!)

 

I've got him on my watchlist, but have to see him step it up soon before I rate him as anything more than an intriguing prospect. Time's not exactly on his side.
