PEDs can cause the flatbones of the head -- such as the forehead and side of the jaw -- to grow, sometimes even to gigantic proportions. In addition, PED's cause muscle tissue around the skull to harden and thicken. This includes the muscle tissue at the top of the jaw, just beheath the the temples. These physical changes can make a guy more resistant to punches.

Obviously, Briggs has experienced everything I describe above. That's clear from the photos. So, it may indeed be true that PEDs have increased Briggs's durability.

Vitali doesn't hit nearly as hard as Lewis and never has. Lennox Lewis has sharp snapping concussive shots and Vitali has slow clubbing arm punches. Vitali never has early KO's because he has to beat a guy down for a long time to stop them. That being said,Vitali is psychically very strong but his style is such that he has to beat the guys down that's all.

 

Briggs had a far thicker neck and traps in the Vitali fight than he did earlier in his career. Better shock absorbers I guess.
