Why do people re-write history?

Remember, Jones was ranked the number 6 LHW by ring magazine. He was coming off a 3 fight win streak, and many professional boxers and analysts picked Jones to win. What followed was one of the most one sided beatdowns ever witnessed on American soil.

Calzaghe was 37 years old, Jones was 38 years old. Calzaghe had taken more punishment and been in more wars. Neither were in their prime.

Look at it this way, after Jones tested positive for steroids (in the Richard Hall fight), from there on we can establish that he was a clean fighter. The opposition Roy faced after this fight was disgracefully poor, even a clean Roy Jones beat these guys comfortably.

Then, Jones steps up his competition to face Tarver, who pushes him to a MD, then gets stopped in the rematch. Then Jones faces another champion on a good winning run in Glen Johnson, who again stops him. Then Jones pushes Tarver in the rubber match, ultimately losing clearly.

Then, Jones faces the likes of Ajamu, Hanshaw and washed up Trinidad (similar level of opposition to Kelly's, Woods and Harmon's), and the wins keep on rolling. Then he steps up to fight Calzaghe, and gets schooled. Then Jones faces washed up Lacy, and Sheika and surprise surprise he starts winning again.

 

It was one of the more overrated "controversies" ever. Roy won it with bodywork, or you can say Tarver choked it away, but the best I can see for Tarver is a draw.

Tarver gets a lot of flack and people call him a "one-hit wonder", but he faced a LOT of top-rated LHWs of his time. It often took him twice to win, but he was certainly more than just a guy who got lucky with a single shot.

He was one of the top LHWs in the world for awhile.

 

Tarver is really friggin underrated.

Reggie Johnson, Montell Griffin, Glen Johnson, Eric Harding, and Clinton Woods were all top-rated LHWs when Tarver beat them, in addition to RJJ.

Tarver was not a great fighter but he was a good one and definitely had one of the best LHW resumes of the 00s.
