After an impressive start against Johnson the 32 year old Samoan born fighter suffered a late stoppage loss in April. Leapais trainer and manager, Noel Thornberry confirmed the news with Aus-Boxing.com. Alex thought that his hand would heal itself, said Thornberry. After seeing a specialist and undergoing a MRI, they found that the hood which holds the ligament in place was displaced on his middle finger/knuckle, and when he makes a fist his ligament falls between the knuckles. Leapai was looked at to take the place of fellow Australian, Kali Meehan in the International Prizefighter tournament next month in the UK after Meehan pulled out on his contract for an unknown reason, but the recent hand injury put an end to that.
Alex came to boxing late as did Browne. He's more dangerous and experinced at this stage of their careers. Alex has a limited technique, it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks, although a few like Seth Mitchell seem to make a good fist of it. Seems to prove that a true athlete has a head start. Leapai is like a poor man's David Tua.
....0 yes, i found out yesterday about alex hand. just after i posted a thread in the UK forum. he would have given his profile a huge boost in the prizefighter series. win lose or draw, alex is a crowdpleaser. however, one must look at it as an optimist. for 3-4 months alex is going to be training using only the jab, left rips and hooks.... great opportunity to get some polish on alex left hand.:hey .
