BJ does know he has just put himself in the old boxer stage right? The staying around too long and looking bad against young guys stage. If BJ is in shape, i'd give him a shot, but he won't be and he'll get embarresed. He's gonna have to wrestle him. Anything else will most likely lead to a total mauling.
Nobody has ever steam rolled Penn including Machida , Rory MaCdonald aint gonna steam roll Penn :deal
MacDonald isn't going to beat him standing. i don't know why people think he will. His chance is to take him down and GnP the ****ing **** out of him, which very likely can happen. If BJ doesn't get into better shape than he was against Nick Diaz, he is going to get ****ing destroyed. If BJ is in the kind of shape he was in against Hughes and Fitch, I think he avoids taked downs the first 2 rounds and beats Rory standing, maybe even taking him down and possibly submitting him. then he will survive round 3 and get the W. Very very good fight for BJ IF he is 120% focused and motivated. Very very bad fight for BJ if he is just doing it for the love of fighting and for the money. I WOULD NOT BET ON THIS FIGHT, because it is too hard to call where BJ is at.
Why not fight Melendez at LW? That kinda tells me that BJ isn't 120% motivated, since he doesn't want to fight the bigger name, at his better weight. I'm sure they would bring Melendez to UFC to fight him if he wanted.
Id give BJ an edge standing up especially in the 1st when hes fresh. BJ's takedown defense and striking are always so good in the 1st but Rory is a bigger, stronger fighter and more then likely he will wear Penn down like Fitch did like GSP did like Hughes did. Rory is a beast just look at him suplexing Diaz over and over and over. I think Winefella say there is no way Rory takes him down. It wont be easy to do it but BJ's takedown defense isnt THAT good and a young, super strong and athletic grappling beast like Rory should be able to get it to the ground eventually. The only time we really seen Rory in trouble was in the 3rd vs Condit well hes improved since then and BJ has the same issues in almost every fight or atleast at 170.
this. its not a case of bj showing up "in shape" anymore, or being past his prime. physically hes fine. his problems are motivational, his desire is gone. a fired up, pissed off penn fighting for his pride or revenge is a problem for anyone but that guy is gone and now we get slightly annoyed penn fighting for money showing up in his place.
Rory wins this very easily imo. Bj won't last the distance. It will be the third fight in a row at 170 that he gets a brutal beating.
BJ shouldn't be at 170, when he fights at 155 it makes him get in shape. Rory tossed Nate Diaz around at will in their fight So I would assume he can handle BJ, even tho BJ can graple with anybody I don't think he can handle Rory for 3 fast paced rounds.
Penn's cardio is so bad it makes average Joes look like Boston marathon winners. It's hard for me to see BJ winning unless he finds a way to take Rory out quick.
If BJ can fight with his Fitch gameplan id give him his best chance to win. If he can get Rory down early in round 1 and test Rory's defensive ground game. BJ has one of the best top games in MMA history.
Penn's woeful preparation for Diaz and the fact he's had so long off " should " be all the motivation he needs to have a real proper training camp , and come in some sort of shape to actually think about winning , I'm looking forward to this because i think MaCdonald is beatable with BJ's skill set i really do
i know many people wanna give bj a bj, but cum on, he has done dick all in the last few years, aside from cathcing a past it hughes on a shot he will look ok in the first, then gas, then get into trouble...if he gets put on his back, he is ****ed...for such a high level bjj guy, his game off his back (in mma) is very very passive is it a step up for rory, yes, it is...but he should handle it just fine
