Numbers wise, Floyd might get passed him. Don't think that makes him the bigger draw though (unless we're basing what 'bigger draw' means purely on numbers, of course). Oscar was certainly more well-known by the "casual" (and "non-boxing") fans.
Oscar was hugely popular in boxing, but I don't know looking back that he was as massive a crossover star in the mainstream as he was made out to be. Floyd's been on Dancing With The Stars, and was paid $20M to be a main attraction at a Wrestlemania. He also had his rivalry with Pacquiao which has been discussed to no end the last few years beyond boxing circles. Oscar had his album stunt which got him a Latin Grammy nomination, but that was about it getting him mainstream attention outside of his boxing. His fishnet scandal happened late in his career and was inconsequencial.
Oscar and Mayweather are about the same but, for different reasons. Additionally, Mayweathers numbers wouldn't be as good if he didn't have Pac. The numbers look good only because more people have access to PPV. I'm sure the likes of Ali and Tyson would have done double those numbers if PPV was as widespread.
wouldnt say so. except the klitschkos and haye, who is there around to make good ppv's? lewis, holyfield arent around. bowe not around. tua retired. dont know if tyson vs povetkin or ali vs fury would make numbers as big as mayweather vs cotto or pacquiao vs hatton. yet. I wouldnt say mayweathers numbers are big because of pac. oscar obviously would have had lesser big numbers wouldnt have been mosley or trinidad around. down the line...pac, money and oscar did big numbers because one was very beautiful and still a raw hard puncher, the other a master technician with a flamboyend lifestyle and the other simply the man who kicks ass..
Well ****, Floyd is a natural lightweight and you want to compare him to the numbers of heavyweights? People will always tune in to big name heavies no matter what.
De la Hoya seemed to average 700k against lower draw opposition, actually looking at it only the fights with Mayweather, Trinidad and Hopkins went to 1million. Where as Mayweather seems to average 1million now. Part of that is 24/7 and greater access to PPV but he's gone 1million or more with Cotto, Ortiz, Hatton, Mosley, Marquez and ofcourse De La Hoya Whitaker, Chavez and Trinidad helped a little bit to say the least
Yes. Floyd is bigger than Oscar ever was at this point. I'll even go so far to say that He was the reason his fight with Oscar sold. I remember 24/7 and all the Hype. It was not about Oscar but Floyd and all the trash talking. He made you want to tune in to see him either kick some ass or get his ass kicked. Plus he was just coming off his Gatti performance. Oscar did not make Floyd a PPV success. Floyd's talent and personality made him a success. Plenty of guys fought Oscar they did not go on to become PPV stars. Besides, there is a better argument for Gatti "making" Floyd not Oscar.
Mayweather numbers are because of him not Pac. He took part in the largest PPV before Pac came along. If anything Pac's number benefit from Floyd.
