Makes me wonder why a boxer successful in his mid 40s (and an ex convicted felon) who does this gets a pass.

That term is used by many to describe him, mainly because he uses it himself. I don't like it. When I think "old school" fighters, I think of he Cotto's, Gatti's, real warriors who fought everyone and had no prima donna in them. Hopkins wasn't like that, he skipped some great fights in his prime to chase easy money fights, even stalked Tito Trinidad for a rematch instead of making a Calzaghe fight or a Jones rematch which he needed for his legacy. Take nothing away from his accomplishments, what he's done is unique, not only to this era, but to any other. So I don't think that classifies him as old school either.

Er no. Hopkins likes to give it the old school stich, the reality as others have mentioned is that he feasted on smaller guys most of his career.

I also don't recall old school fighters crying like a prima donna when they were beaten.

Hopkins is over rated, especially by people not old enough to know better.

 

The Robert Allen from the first Hopkins fight would be unified middleweight champion right now.
