It gets tiring making the same points over and over but people are too easily swayed in the wrong direction. Seriously folks, I know you aren't about to sit here and watch a full damn fight which is why I always just post clips that can hold people's attention for a few minutes.

Tyson had been battered for the better part of 7-8 rounds here. Watch the damn video. Where is the Mental Breakdown? The Quit?

Anyway, that guy who did all those videos, showed a great H.L. clip of Tyson vs. Douglas. The shots and combinations Douglas was landing was lethal. The H.L. of that fight made by him was great because it seemed like he focused in on Douglas kicking the crap out of Tyson. I like Tyson but Damn...that was a beautiful display by Douglas.

I'm still waiting for someone to point all this out to a certain someone and the writers who lead the way for this nonsense.

By far one of the greatest posters and human beings ever, in my honest opinion.

 

We were discussing this very fight on here a few weeks ago when someone asked about bobbing and weaving.There's an alternative commentary where the guy says as the punch lands;"and that's goodnight Vienna!"
You can question the opponents credentials but it's certainly one of the picks for a highlight reel.
Take it for what it was,a fabulous example of a man on his way to the top of Everest,just before he reaches reaches the peak.

Anyway, getting back to Douglas. Douglas was certainly committed to those punches he was throwing.

The size difference between the two is an absolute ****ing joke. Most importantly due to the skill set Douglas actually had but rarely came in condition to showcase.

He hit Tyson in the closer with what can only be described as: "Dat Uppercut".

Damn I am such a fan of Tyson's bobbing and weaving.

 

I think in most cases like this it's more instinct than heart that makes a fighter struggle up.
But I like the rest of your post.

 

Tyson did say it became instinctual from training with D'Amato to keep standing and fighting until the end but it still takes someone with "Heart" to last as long as he did. He could have quit on his stool at any point past the mid-point like some others. He could have let his mind get the better of him and go down to avoid taking more punishment. Fighters have done that even when not seriously hurt just to avoid pain. And you have guys that can be hurt, go down, and just say, the hell with this....kinda like he did against Williams but I wouldn't hold that against him to much considering this was many many years later and he shouldn't have been in the ring at that point anyway. O', and he did fight on despite the injury so a little credit his way. I think it was more of the "I'm gettin to old for this ****" moment of realization.

I've had several conversations on the matter with different people. When I brought up how Tyson was visibly hurt, back against the ropes, Douglas pounding away, and Tyson still willing to unleash those uppercuts...the person told me "so what; even cats when backed into a corner will fight back."

Ok, let's say that's true. But then why does that only apply to Tyson and not everyone else or are they given credit for their bravery?

The fact is, he didn't go down and he kept fighting back. He didn't even just cover up like most do. He fought back. And he fought back with Uppercuts...same punch that dropped Douglas before. Now was that out of desperation, out of self-preservation to save his own life? SURE, if this was an actual fight to the death. This is a sport. He was in position to drop to a knee and he didn't. He fought back.

I'm talking about a guy that was visibly hurt, pushed back to the ropes, taking bombs from a bigger fighter, stronger fighter, and even started to come back forward after that punishment despite one eye swollen shut, looked exhausted and beaten to a pulp. But that's somehow the man with no heart and a coward/bully. If someone else was in that position, that man would be praised.

That's my problem with Teddy Atlas's "Game Quitter," remark. He is putting in the "Quitter" word to knock Tyson and not give him any credit at all. And although I get it...as it being a way to say that he was willing to take his beating but his belief in winning was gone or severely dissipated....and looking ahead, he did this with Lewis, but again, way way past his better days and he shouldn't have been in the ring...but going back.. how many fighters in that position have done the same...or really, have been able to do the same because I've seen a lot of fights where fighters just pack it in and drop to a knee and or lay down for the night. And unlike in the Lewis fight...here, he was still fighting back.

And given what we know...and we can go back over the articles of how ****-poor shape Tyson was in on all fronts...and some of those articles are actually leading up to the fight: Mentally, Physically, and Technically....and include that he was going up against a bigger, more motivated, in shape Weapon that night....and after several rounds of getting tagged with bombs that swelled up your eye...come on....just a little credit would be nice.

But I'm sure Teddy and others could take shots like this all night long and still be game
