I'm not going to weigh in on the injuries. That's something I've never been faced with. Been on the wrong side of a sparring session but never those types of injuries.

I'm talking about the kid's behavior. The pattern of odd and kind of sad behavior is painfully obvious. Says he doesnt deserved to get smacked around after the Maidana fight. His inexplicable actions against Floyd (don't give me the elbow ****) only to try and hug and kiss the guy and seemingly posing to get knocked out only to smile and laugh about it after the fight.

Then last night I saw a totally unnecessary flush blow to the back of the head only to have him drop his hands again and try to apologize and hug the guy. You could hear Reiss clear as day say "get your hands up." Vic was still apologizing 30 seconds later patting Lopez on the ass after a clinch. Winking at him from across the ring after the first round. Then he's seemingly aww shucks laughing and smiling after the fight.

The kid has some mental issues and needs to talk to someone before continuing his career.

Hopefully he figures it out and rights the ship because he's still young but he makes Sakio Bika look level headed as they come and i think Bika has issues too.

I agree and I think it's harsh that people just put it down to him being a quitter or whatever. I don't think that's true, but he definitely isn't consistently mentally strong. He's a good fighter when he is on it but the sad thing is, he is far too easily distracted from that. Look at the Peterson fight, the rapid change in mentality against Mayweather, the difference in mentality during the fight against Maidana and then what happened last night. There's definitely something happening with him and the frustrating thing is, against Berto, he proved that he had a massive heart.

I don't think he's weak mentally but I don't think he's strong mentally either. He can be both and he needs some guidance to make him mentally strong all the time because if he can find that within him, he will be a very good fighter. It's his missing link right now.

I'll put it this way, Jack....he's unstable mentally. youre right, against berto he stood strong. i think he sensed he was breaking berto down. against guys where he sensed he wasnt breaking them down, he loses it and resorts to fouling then apologizing and you can see him wilt mentally. its kind of sad b/c he clearly has talent.

    he's just very unstable.

he should consult with a normal psychologist to address his compulsive acts of unacceptable behavior, where he sees red and does something deliberate and ridiculous. I dont think a sports psychologist will help him. victor ortiz seems to care about his health more than the average elite level fighter with a physical, banger sort of style. he cares very much what happens to him, and if he feels he's had enough then he'll pull out. I don't think a sports psychologist can really change that inclination in him.

fair enough i edited the title.

but i'm not talking about the injuries. not wanting to continue b/c of those injuries in and of itself isnt troubling. its his other behavior. he fades mentally when he can't bully his opponent and then resorts to impulsive illegal acts only to damn near cry about it in apology afterwards.

its odd and in need of addressing before he continues.

I think "unstable" is the perfect description. Those calling him weak minded need to watch him go to war with Berto.

If he could have that form regularly, he'd be an excellent fighter.

Those are some valid points...this guy grew up with hate in his heart and i think he doesnt know how to control it inside the ring. Regardless i dont defend his actions and i dont think he quit because hes crazy only he knows if he could have continued

oh for sure he had it tough coming up. not going to trivialize that. never would trivialize what he had to go through. i'm sure its a major contributing factor to his instability. maybe if its addressed he can right the ship b/c he has talent and he's young but he can't continue with the same mental state and baggage he's carrying around.

he's a threat to himself and other fighters.

I agree. I am currently in the process of studying psychology to help with my training business and he appears to have a disorder. Probaly due to his upbringing. It seems through his extra curricular activities that he enjoys athletic activities but breaks down when he is challenged.

Obvious fouls could also be taken as a sign he just wants out of the fight. You could see him pause and think about the blow to the back of Lopez's head before throwing it.

i agree with you and truewarrior. i'm sure his upbringing, or lack thereof, is huge. i'm sure he gets a great release from physical activity. he does marathons and triathalons, etc.

but i think your right, when he can't bully his way out of a situation, he wilts mentally and resorts to odd and obvious fouls only to break down even further mentally and seemingly refusing to get his hands up until he gets "forgivness" from his opponent.

its sad i really hope the kid gets some help.

he for sure thought about it. On the replay, Reiss was wrong, it wasnt a glancing blow. it landed flush across his knuckles. but he looked like he was going to cry again and refused to engage until he got some forgiveness.

I was shaking my head when Reiss was telling them both (but clearly aimed at Ortiz) to get their hands up. Even the announcing crew was pretty much saying "here we go again."

Ortiz is unlucky man imo he would have gone on to Tko lopez he definitely looked like he had a lot more energy left he looked the stronger better fighter in there imo.
