i don't get this beleif in channel 5 to be the saviour of boxing. they clearly have no clue what there doing. the Hattons and Maloney are more likley to have no deal than channel 5.

I think it actually makes a Price vs Fury fight more unlikely...........as Price doesn't have the money that Sky can bring to such a fight.

CH5 aren't likely to have 2 world contenders on their books........only to have one eliminated by the other........it makes little business sense......and that's what Ch5 is .......a business.

If Fury wasn't already a Ch 5 fighter.......then yes CH5 may well have snapped up Price.........but I think Sky also know that CH5 aren't likely to snatch Price whilst they have Fury.

    And risk losing Fury..........unlikely!;)

Let's face it Fury doesn't want to face Price.........and that is why team Fury are perfectly happy for their man to take on the likes of Rogan & Maddalone.

Inside Lines: Sky falls in on Maloney even though heavy Price is right

After ditching Ricky Hatton, whose illustrious Hitman fight career helped build their reputation as the prime boxing channel, Sky have KO'd fellow promoter Frank Maloney, who learned last week that after 22 years they are not renewing his contract.

It seems an odd decision, as Maloney has one of the hottest properties – the unbeaten British heavyweight champion David Price, a big-hitting Klitschko-sized Liverpudlian rated as Britain's best hope for a world title. He is next due to fight in the United States. However, Maloney has been told Sky still want to screen his future Price fights – but only under the promotion of Eddie Hearn, son of the ubiquitous Barry, whose Matchroom organisation seems to be headed for UK exclusivity on the channel. Before the 28-year-old Price won the British title with a stunning KO of Sam Sexton last month, Maloney revealed he was in contract negotiations with cost-cutting Sky. "But I don't kid myself," he said. "If Price gets hit on the chin I probably won't get a call." He did – but to his amazement it was one telling him there was no new deal. Last night a Sky spokesman would say only: "We wish David Price well in his next fight and hope to show him again on Sky Sports in the future." A more likely scenario is that Maloney will link up with the BoxNation channel, whose subscriptions have rocketed with their promotion of the "outlawed" Haye-Chisora scrap next month.

Boxing shoots itself in the foot with its handling of David Price

DAVID PRICE wants to fight on Sky Sports. Sky Sports want David Price on their channel. Yet we are left in a confusing void where nobody is left with what they wished for.

Boxing often finds itself a bedfellow of oddity and bewildering decisions are always round the corner for a sport which hits self-destruct too many times to mention.

But this latest move makes you scratch your head hard. Really hard.

After stopping Sam Sexton in four, dominant rounds on May 19 to win the vacant British and Commonwealth titles, Price should have been buried in opportunities and offers.

Negotiations between Sky executives and his promoter Frank Maloney were taking place before the bout at Aintree but Price’s right hand should have settled the deal there and then. By dismantling Sexton, he did what no other had done before and Price made it crystal clear that he means business in the heavyweight division.

He did so in front of a television audience of around 400,000.

However that excitement has been replaced by uncertainty this summer.

For over two decades, Maloney has worked with Sky Sports but was informed there would be no renewal of his contract.

Ricky Hatton has also been ditched from Sky’s roster of promoters, as the station go for ‘quality rather than quantity’.

Price was offered the chance to stay on the platform, the one which could boost his profile like no other, but he had to do it under a new promoter, Eddie Hearn.

However, Price has remained loyal to the ousted Maloney, the man who guided Lennox Lewis to the world title and the man who believes he can do the same with Liverpool’s heavyweight.

Sky Sports declined the ECHO’s request for an interview and would not comment on the suggestion that high ranking officials within their structure are reluctant to work with a group of promoters anymore.

Hearn, it appears, has won a near exclusive deal with Sky to broadcast boxing next season. Only one boxer outside of their stable, Amir Khan, looks like being regularly televised by Sky.

But Hearn’s Matchroom are not to blame here. They are a fine promotional company who regularly stage shows of value and have refreshed the sport with the regular Prizefighter series.

Hearn’s stable includes world super-middleweight champion Carl Froch, the exciting Kell Brook and several others.

Crucially, however, they don’t posses a man in the marquee division.

They don’t have a fighter to draw in the casual fan like only a heavyweight can.

    They don’t have David Price.

It begs the question why have Sky Sports not bent over backwards to keep the West Derby man on board? Maloney would need only five shows a year at a cost to Sky of £100,000 a time.

Even though they have just shelled out over £2bn to secure Premier League rights for another three seasons, surely Sky Sports can find money for Price.

Nothing is a certainty in sport, least of all in heavyweight boxing where a concussive crack on the chin is an occupational hazard, but Price is worth any gamble.

He has the pedigree, physique, attitude and punching power to be a world champion.

The BBC had their fingers burned by Audley Harrison and Sky felt the backlash of his under-whelming pay-per view offering against Haye in 2010.

But Price is a different specimen.

Other channels can see this and it is understood BoxNation have tabled a deal whilst Primetime were said to be showing interest.

Price remains a wanted man, just not necessarily by people who should want him the most.

Maloney would only confirm that he is deep in discussions with two channels and that he remains confident Price will find a home in time for his first British title defence, scheduled for October in Liverpool.

Unfortunately that will not be on Sky.

Sky’s boxing coverage is excellent and their Ringside programme is a welcome addition to the weekly routine. They persevered with the sport when others left it.

But there’s a 6’8” hole in the schedule now.

As a subscriber, knowing Price is out there, you can’t help but feel short changed.

David Price is so overhyped its untrue. Yes he looks the part but 1 wild swing on his shaky jaw and its hype over. People need to calm down.

I cannot see Primetime being the one so it has to be between Channel 5 and Boxnation.
If Fury steps up quickly and Price was happy to have a few more British/European fights i think Channel 5 would be the best option and who knows down the line CH5 could have a massive fight in Fury Price.
