I hear a lot about 'promoters' these days, but how many of them 'actually' promote, and for what fights have you actually seen them promote?

Take something like Haye vs. Chisora -

    • Press Conference
    • Interviews on BoxNation
    • Amatuer Youtube Videos
    • No Public engagements
    • No Publicity Stunts (Not including the Brawl prior to all this)

I know some fights 'promote themselves' - But what in the way of effort and ideas do we see?

Most promotion just tends to be done by the TV companies to drive PPV Sales/Subscriptions/Viewing figures.

But other than the standard 3 press conferences, Weigh-In, half a dozen 'face-offs', what do promoters do to actually PROMOTE the event?

  2. Promoters secure financing (see: borrow money) for advertising (see: promotion).

    sorry but /thread

Promoters don't pay for advertising on the TV stations that are putting on their shows. The TV stations have just as much a need to promote these shows as the promoters themselves.

If a show is on HBO or Skysports, do you think these guys CHARGE MONEY to put an advert up on their respective TV stations for a show thats... on their respective TV stations, and going to make them money too?

    Of course not.

Also, the money promoters put up for a fight is based on advanced fees (if applicable) and investment required for a show - Venue hire etc.

    Your point is mute.

they promote, they get the fight a tv date, they deal with the big wig tv producers, the site owners, the legal aspects, the payroll, the managment companies, the boardroom meetings, the advertisers, the list goes on,

    they run the show basically
    you havent thought this through

How much of that is 'promoting'?

    You're discussing the Administrative/Management aspects.

I'm saying other than the bullet points mentioned above, what do promoters do to build up hype, and actually PROMOTE the event?

Talking to a few suits (whilst necessary) does not = promotion per se.

they get their good fighters the right fights at the right time, as they bring them up along steadily

get them on undercards of bigger shows , get their name out there
all the while building up a fanbase,

look at for example Hatton Tszyu

here you have a really liked fighter , large build up of support, large following and good tv figures, considering this was a guy that was starting out boxing guys with 76 losses

all of a sudden he was undisputed world champ with 39 wins no loss and a PPV future ahead

another great example is Pac v Barerra

Arum also got De la Hoya 50k in the early 1990s for a pro debut

Somebody like Arum has a large network of contacts build up over 50 years thats why guys like Morales Mayweather Pac and Oscar chose him

    as king says

"my magic lies in my people ties"

Basically stop over analysing theres only a handful of really good boxing promoters out there cause its very hard thing to do and be successful at, imagine the criminal elements they have to deal with LOL

They are more managers than promoters. They handle the business side of things, help get a fighter's name out there correctly by gradually exposing them, and occasionally come up with ideas to help sell the fight, like the Ring Kings royal theme and whatnot. But for the most part, I have to agree, they do very little promotion. Arum & DLH's speeches at press conferences are not the selling point behind Top Rank & GBP boxing matches.
