Has any champion ever lost during his 'record padding' stage?

    Basically the stage where he is suppose to win the fights to make his record look better.

    I don't know if Bernard Hopkin's debut loss counts.

    Does Margarito really count? It wasn't like he had a high power promoter looking out for him early on. He was only like fifteen. He was getting fed to bigger, older, more experienced guys in order to pad their records.

    who says all fighters pad their records?

    early career losses are just that- early career losses. Leonard had some early losses, were those in the "padding" stage? Or Charles?

    That's what I was thinking.

    Douglas was supposed to be an easy tune-up fight, which is basically the same thing as padding.
