I ask this question because of his most recent loss to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. I am still not very impressed with JCC, all he did was effectively utilize his biggest advantage.......his size. Power and a sturdy chin normally accompany sheer size, these are the things that Andy let defeat him. But let's not forget that this is not wrestling, this is boxing, a sport where SKILLS pay bills and mastering the sweet science can overcome any physical advantage. After hearing sooo much from Emmanuel Steward about how this guy is the best middleweight fighter out and how he will be great and yadda yadda yadda, my first time watching the great Andy Lee I saw a guy just get downright bullied by a one dimensional, come forward infighter. Why couldn't Andy just stick and move, box, use footwork and a jab to maintain distance? Also I noticed that he wasn't even throwing his punches properly, his form looked a little sloppy. Before you accuse me of being a hater let's remember that this guy is supposed to be a product of the Kronk Gym which specializes in mastering technique so one would expect perfect form ala' Wlad. For Andy to simply say "he was walking through my punches" and expect that to be a legit reason for losing to a guy who chose to infight the whole time is not acceptable. Andy should take a lesson from Paulie Malignaggi who is a pure boxer with no power so everyone walks through his shots, but he still has the resiliency to find ways around sheer size and stick to his game plan. And before you guys give me crap about the Paulie reference, Amir Khan and Miguel Cotto are way better fighters that JCC. I won't count Juan Diaz.
Nah give him some more fights with actual middleweights ..Chavez was a dam cruiser weight and a huge disadvantage against him !
Yes, Lee is. No doubt about it. There are also others who are clearly a hype job: 1. Bute 2. Lara 3. Froch
I guess. I feel that if you have the height advantage, the reach advantage AND Emmanuel Steward you should be able to beat JCC.
Lee is a fine fighter. He was in with a guy 20 lbs heavier, possessing a granite chin, and Lee's strategy (surprisingly) was all wrong after the first few rounds. Also, let's be honest, Chavez Jr is actually becoming a very good fighter. (though it physically hurt me to type / admit that.)
Not a hype job. Firstly because there was not a lot of hype behind him, and secondly because losing doesn't make you a bum. Chavez Jr. is getting better with each fight.
No! Screw the loss on his record, I'm saying that he is VERY highly touted by Steward and couldn't negate a size and strenght advantage. And Chavez might be improving, but he is still not that good of a fighter. Ballooning up after weigh ins just to impose your size on opponents is not getting better.
We'll see. He definitely needs to either work on fitness or move up a division because he was clearly fatigued early and couldn't "box his ass" like Manny wanted him to.
