If you were put in the body of prime Roy Jones Jr

  1. And had all his athleticism, speed and power to your advantage but only your own boxing knowledge, technique and skills.
Do you think you could beat B or C level pro boxers (or even better (unlikely)) just on the sheer athleticism alone? Was he that much of a specimen that anyone with a decent know how of boxing could have done ok in his body?

If you'll forgive the arrogance, I think my boxing knowlege would see me though just fine, provided I had Jones' amazing gifts.

I think I'm still too new to boxing (as a practitioner) to think I would be more effective than RJJ. I can tell you this though: My hands would be kept up.

Most people dont know or dont pay attention to the fact that Jones started boxing as a kid.. He had an excellent amateur career, even being robbed of a Gold medal in the olympics. They've investigated the judges and found them to be on the take.. he has an excellent pedigree and worked his ass off to get where he got... He's done to **** and shot now, but that surely doesnt make his career merely based off athleticism alone...

If I had jones gifts my head would explode through sheer joy

  6. Gifts are there but massively over rated. Jones lived breathed training almost all his career. he was brutally disciplined by his father for mistakes and laziness.

Roy is a gym rat and perfectionist who has worked hard for everything he got.

The thread title is really, really gay

It sounds like a screenplay for a homo-porn movie

Speed, power, athleticism without technique and skills equates to potential only.. And you'd struggle to beat most pro's on potential alone

I believe even with a <90 boxing IQ you could still make it to the pro ranks with Roy's athleticism

Athleticsm without skills will not get you far in boxing. Besides Jones amazing athleticsm/gifts, he was a quite skilled boxer too, and had lots of experience from his amateur days. His athleticism is all but gone these days, but he's still a B-level fighter who wins some fights, cause he can still box a bit. The skills won't go away.

On the other hand, skills without some athleticism will not get you anywhere either. But overall, I believe skills are more important than athleticism.

Look at B-HOP - an athlete for sure, but nowhere near Roy Jones - yet he is more skilled, technically speaking, than Roy, and that's why he remains a top fighter in his division as long as he can keep some of his athleticism. The skills are there.

I wonder if living vicarioiusly through his dad contributed to his rapid downfall.

  12. I think your misunderstanding me chaps. I certainly amn't saying Roy was nothing but an athelete. Hell no. I know the guy was incredibly well rounded but all i'm pointing out was that he is probably the most athletic physically gifted boxer i've ever seen (and no im not just saying he woke up that way I know it was through hard hard work).
What i'm saying is if we were in his prime condition would it be enough that without the same skill level we could still beat b or c class pro's.
Hence I said B and C class. I am not stupid and or arrogant enough to suggest Roy Jones was made on athleticism alone.

  13. Would you insert yourself into prime Roy Jones jr? Be honest

Of course not. All that athleticism don't mean nothing if you can't box or have the boxing IQ to know how to use it. Jones might not have had a textbook style but he knew how to utilize his athleticism to the max. He was a very smart and crafty fighter. He based his game around his athleticism.
