He was a very good fighter. It is a disservice to both Mayweather and Pacquiao to say he was not. He was just not elite. He dared to be great by fighting the two best fighters in the world future ATG's and came up short. Doesn't mean he wasn't very good. He was. B+ level. Just Mayweather and Pacquiao were A+ level - a full level above him, and his style meant he was going to get KO'd as he came forward if his opponent was better than him. Harsh comment.

Had maybe 2-3 more fights at 140 and packed it in

still think if you made Hatton ten years younger, and coming to his prime now. Hatton would wipe the floor with the 140 division.

Didn't matter. Hatton was as good as he was ever going to be by that time. Never was he in the same class as Pac and May. He never even fought Witter, and look at the guys Witter lost to. Hatton would have too. He knew it. Time to retire.

He lost to the P4P #1-2, that's not generally a sign you should retire.

he then won a world title back and beat Paulie

Then he lost badly to the other P4P #1-2, realised his chin was shot and his balooning ****ed him and retired.

Perfect timing i'd say. Beat everyone other than the best 2 in the world, long career, realise you can't achieve much more and are declining, retire.

He should have quit before he made 50 million dollars, OK good idea.

No. He should have found a team that fit with him and dedicated himself to his fitness OUT of training camp. He also should have moved up when his body was ready not his wallet. I can't hate on him for that though. He did outgrow his present team. I would have loved to see him work with a coach that could have upped his defensive skills while still maintaining his grinding offense.

I think we should look at the landscape of 140/147 and evaluate Ricky on who is relevant/dominant today who reminds us most of Ricky. IMHO, that is Timothy Bradley. If Bradley is relevant/dominant today? There is no doubt in my mind that Ricky could have still been VERY relevant at 140-147.

IMHO, Ricky hit a hell of of a lot harder than Bradley, was just as fast if not faster, mauled just as effectively WITHOUT the point costing butting, and was MUCH more accurate than Bradley ever was. I like Tim Bradley, but prime Ricky Hatton was everything Bradley is and then some. I do however think Bradley executes a Pure Boxer Plan B better than Hatton ever could/would.

I think Ricky got dealt a hell of a hand to deal with mentally and walked away. I can't knock the man for losing to two HOF fighters. One of which is probably the best since Sugar Ray Leonard. Fighting is a tough racket. Ricky had other options and pursued them. Again, can't hate the man for that.

For those that say Hatton wasn't "elite"? If you slapped Baldomir's, Margarito's, or Clottey's size on him he would have been an absolute monster at 147. Margarito with more speed and explosiveness coupled with never ending mauling.

No, I don't think so. Malinaggi is his second best win imo, and Lazcano was a decent scalp as well.
