If it wasn't for pressure fighters, the sport would not be what it is today. Same with technical boxers. What make boxing a great sports is the diversity of fighting styles.

How about Julio Cesar Chavez? Tyson, Nigel Benn, Duran at lower weights.

Anyone can name a C Level pressure fight like Brandon Rios. Likewise I can mention a C level pure boxer like Mike Jones.

SRL was being outboxed by Hearns, SRL then stop boxing and started putting pressure on Hearns. Point being pressure/slugger/brawler is part of the sport.

    :deal:deal

a C level fighter is a C level fighter regardless of style, there are plenty examples of A+ level pressure fighters in history with equal skill to A+ boxers....different skill set required but arguably one that is more difficult to employ at the highest levels than pure boxing. When a pressure fighter has great defense, slipping punches while applying pressure there's nothing more beautiful to watch imo.

    excellent question.

i think it has everything to do with the lack of knowledge with the ppl who cover/follow the sport. i think if guys like ray robinson existed today, he'd be **** on by the "experts" at hbo.

margarito, rios, pavlik, segura...guys like that apply mindless pressure and their answer to everything is "more!" they are c-level fighters with a-level toughness.

guys like roberto duran, felix trinidad or mike tyson are aggressive counterpunchers who knew how to apply pressure to force u to make a mistake and make u pay immediately. a-level fighters a-level skills.

but i agree that all styles are what make boxing interesting. we need them all. some styles definitely require more intelligence. i'll always favor intelligence.

Swarming is probably the hardest style to pull off.

Pressure fighters have to wear opponents down throughout the fight.

It's sluggers like Lucaz, Maidana, emmanroid, etc that are often overrated even though they tend to be limited. People see their power and get more excited than a 16 year old ***** seeing her first live ****. Don't confuse genuine pressure fighters, swarmers, for sluggers just because they both happen to be aggressive.

It takes no skill, therefore anyone can do it annd make it to a world class level by your logic. There's a science behind everything they do. Step into a boxing gym and then realize that there's so much to do, learn about applying intelligent pressure. Foot placement, feinting, body placement, head movenment and placement and much more. To say it takes no skill is a slap to guys who put pressure intelligently and just shows you're ignorance and bias to one style.

Each aspect of the sweet science deserves praise, and respect. . .

boxing is not just slickness (although that's one of my favorite aspects), there's plenty more that take skill, and deserve appreciation. . . It's not just jabbing off the back foot. . . And yes, it's not just pressuring/inside fighting. . .

Wrong. Rios-Murray was not just two men trading punches back and forth standing straight up. That kind of fight requires knowing how to push off with the shoulders, fight out of a crouch without being off balance and overly exposing your chin, anticipate punches with limited vision, throw varied combos to lower your opponent's guard, make your punches short to avoid counters, etc. Even the crudest looking inside fight often involves the mechanics of learned technique.

Maidana has gotten to where he has because of a raw sense of cleverness and timing to compliment his natural abilities. Plenty of fighters have good chins and lots of raw power, and they never even land on opponents near divisional top-ten talent. He has poor technique in many areas, but that doesn't mean he doesn't know how to make his offense and defense effective enough to get the job done most of the time. Watch him spar and time sharp right hands over slightly lowered jabs, much like he did against the superior boxer in Khan to hurt him; watch him clumsily (but effectively) feint and smartly throw to the body against Ortiz. Not everyone can do that.

Watch some of the old time fighters. I think its funny u say the more "skilled" type fighters 9/10 times at the highest level the pressure fighter won. Sal sanchez/gomez, leonard/hearns (i kno leonard isnt a pressure fighter but tell me he wasnt good at it), duran/leonard all perfect examples
