This is a guy that was a career lightweight. But for some reason wether it was his ambitions outside of the ring with school and business, seemed to lack proper training to get down to a weight where he would not be the smaller guy all the time.

Juan Diaz always carried unecessary weight, possibly from a bad diet or lack of training, but the way I look at it, had he been 10 pounds lighter, he would have more punching power in the lower weights, and would have been able to acheived more.

What do you guys think of the flab around him? Had he shed these pounds and been a featherweight instead of a lightweight, would of had a longer career and have been more succesful?

It was a close fight against Nate where his cut hindered his performance.

    Marquez destroyed him though.

not with a style of a pressure fighter without the power.

had he adapted a malignaggi style or a gayweather style, the hit and better not get hit, he can.

Yes I agree the cut bothered him almost like he started to panic.
His style is tailor made for Marquez.

That's what I'm saying. His power wasn't terrible, but it was slightly below average. Had he trimmed down to 126 he could have possibly had more pop naturally. Juan Diaz carried a lot of fat for a fighter in the lower weights.

Like when he fought Malignaggi, Paulie was chiseled, cut weight, and was naturally bigger and stronger than Diaz, basically a WW fighting a FW.

He accomplished a lot. World Champion, ambassador of the sport, four year college degree. He seems like a guy who is genuinely happy out of the ring.

Strictly from a boxing standpoint, he might have gone a little farther, but not much.

He couldn't get down to 126. Maybe 130.

He went as far as he could, unified lw champ. He didn't have enough power to go upto lww, hence when he fought pillow fist malignaggi, he demanded a catch weight.

He demanded a catchweight because he was already a featherweight fighting a lightweight, where Paulie was a WW fighting at Jr. WW.

    He had a great career

for not being fully dedicated he won defended and unified a title

also the extra weight and not draining may have been more comfortable and may have allowed him to fight the way he fought

taking the 5 or 10 pounds off could have changed what he did in the ring

the guy went unbeat for yrs held multiple titles and beat some very good fighters and went life and death with others

just cause he wasnt P4P or moving up winning all these belts or a PPV mega star doesnt mean he had a bad career

look what he did at such a young age while it wasnt even his primary life focus

Juan Diaz is one of my favorite fighters, I think the TS like me just wishes he was still fighting and maybe that had something to do with his weight or chubbiness. Perhaps he'd still be fighting if he were a FW or SFW. He brought it against Marquez in that first fight in a way that just made you respect the guy, even with the outcome. If he had power, yes he would have been on some P4P lists at least. He constantly put hands on guys. He just had a great style and great demeanor outside the ring.
