Diaz seems like he can teach anyone the fundamentals. Not sure how he'd match up with Khan though. Steward would probably help tighten his game up as well, making sure he brings his hands back and whatnot. Ultimately though, I think Roach is the way to go. Roach maximizes Khan's offensive strengths in a way few trainers would IMO, and avoids his weaknesses. It would be best to see him work on those weaknesses, namely his defensive upper body movement and inside fighting, but he's still learning well and has time to improve in those areas.
Diaz is still a largely unknown commodity at the pro level. Khan's stamina was never an issue and that was really Diaz's greatest contribution to Cotto's game. Being from the amateur background, I seriously doubt Diaz would be equipped to help Khan on his inside technique (of which he has none), but he could possibly polish it up whatever he does now. I have more faith that Steward would at least try to address Khan's flaws. But I think he would get into "tall man" (always working behind the jab and never getting into an inside war) fight mode with Khan and have him continually use distance, as has been a winning formula with him. I agree that Roach is okay for now. But I feel Khan is gonna get punished when he moves up in weight anyway, so changing trainers wouldn't do him much good regardless.
He would do well with Steward. Who wouldn't? Steward is one of the smartest trainers in boxing. The stuff he sees and figures out is amazing.
I actually think Khan and Steward would be a HELL of a match. . . Khan has the build, and speed to make Steward's style of straight up, tall fighting effective. . . He's too late in his career to really learn to be a guy who can stand in the pocket, or the inside, bob, weave, and pick shots off. . He's an outside fighter, and his best defensive is his offense, and his fast feet to simply skeet away from danger, and move around. . . He'll never be a guy who bends at the waist, and stays on the inside, etc., etc. . Steward would LOVE to train Khan, I'm sure. . . That natural speed? Best in boxing right now. . . But I think Roach is also a very good match, and Khan shouldn't even be close to thinking about leaving Roach.
