Generalizations like this one is either totally ignorant or dishonest. Standouts are standouts, no matter what era they're from.
C'mon a couple of strategic and well placed F Bombs, certainly show an uncanny depth of insight and articulation....He may have a point. Either way he sounds like he knows his boxing, and I for one want more.
if langford has seen jones fight a few times then he starts from rd 1 with a plan for landing, and probably does. but without the research it will take a good few rounds to adjust for the speed/style and shortens the time that he will be effective.
There are certain things that transcend eras e.g power, chin, reflexes and god given handspeed. Even if you think that boxing technique has "evolved", you could get hand speed like Jones or power like Shavers in the bareknuckle era.
Langford looks like too much of a relentless puncher for anyone at 175, for me Charles had the best chance to beat him and ol Archie may do it. Spinks, Foster, Conn had a chance but tough to pick against Sam at 175lbs
Absolutely. Young Griffo was the Roy Jones of his era, and he confused everybody. If you put Jones in 1910, he is going to run riot for a while, but eventualy somebody is going to learn from everybody elses mistakes, and check his chin.
Glen Johnson didn't just KO Roy Jones, he had many fans worried that tragedy might happen in the ring. It took Jones over a minute to wake up. Jones was a great offensive boxer. His speed, accuracy, and power were too much for B level guys to over come. But Jones has a glass jaw, as Tarver who also wasn't a huge puncher showed by taking Jones out with one punch, the first clean one that landed in the 2nd round. Langford, I think would track Jones down, and take him out.
The body is there for the taking against Roy, and that's how Sam would slow him down and stop him. I have no doubts that Roy would tag Sam with some tremendous shots, but this isn't Vinny Paz, Jeff Lacy or Montell Griffin were talking about. Langford would accentuate his lack of height and pound Jr's body on way to a stoppage.
This is how I see it in almost all cases. I do think Tunney could jab, box and move enough to earn a points decision over Langford though.
Russian roulette? Maybe. Barrel of a shotgun between my eyes, Langford no surprise. I'd give Roy a few of the early rounds in a 15 round contest. Sam would eventually close the gap, make Roy miss being a lot shorter and counter him into his punch advantage. When he gets the lead in the middle rounds, the end would be near for Roy. There's a reason why Sam was widely considered the most avoided fighter ever with respect to Holman Williams and Charley Burley. If Jones can convincingly beat a prime Jack Johnson around the same time he beat Sam, than maybe I'd give Roy a chance. Don't think it would happen though. Langford's power too much for Roy from his compact physique. His body shots would break him down.
Would you pick any athlete from any sport from the 1910's over any of the great athletes of the last decade or so? **** NO. FACT. SAME GOES FOR BOXING.
Young Griffo and Roy Jones it's the same thing And the strategy of trying to hit him on the chin, if only they'd thought of that :rofl Yes Janitor would, he reckons Jessie Owens would hold his own with Bolt if he had the same shoes and track and he uses the example of ultra running, which no one does as not improving that much
