Thanks, guys. Khan was fighting Garcia at mid-range, with very little lateral movement. He was also the one pushing the fight, being aggressive. Garcia was the one waiting and choosing his spots. Garcia's entire gameplan relied on exploiting Khan's aggression and waiting for one big counter -- when I watched the fight I noticed that the very first shot Garcia threw was the counter left-hook, and he was looking for that shot throughout the whole match until it landed just right. Khan has speed, a jab, and decent height/reach -- why not move and make Garcia come to him? As Garcia comes forward, Khan could keep him off balance with the jab, and occasionally follow up with the straight right. Stick to long, straight punches from the outside rather than hooks and uppercuts at mid-range. Also, he should keep his right hand glued to the side of his face when he throws punches. When you do throw the right, get right back to the high guard. All of this would minimise the chances of getting countered. He can also employ more feints to draw the big left, then counter with his own straight right. (If he gets hurt again, he should also clinch more rather than swinging back too much.) The problem is that Khan doesn't have the mindset for defensive and patient fighting. He's always been an impatient and aggressive fighter. He's also eager to entertain the crowd, which is another weakness in this case. He needs to work on boxing off the back foot and defensive skills, but he also needs to somehow adapt his mentality/mindset in the ring. That mental aspect is critical. If he can't learn to be patient, to break someone down slowly, to stay on the outside and draw people in, etc, then he's going to get knocked out again, because every opponent from now on is going to try planting their feet and throwing full power counters when he comes in with his combinations.
Great observations. I'd also add that Khan was less over-eager, and thus fell in on the inside much less with his shots against Marcos and Peterson. The flaws were always there, but he's managed them much better in the past.
Well drugged or not (not supporting drug use though), Peterson took the fight to Khan and Khan had no answers, he just fought back just as hard. Peterson isnt a ko artist. he breaks you down and thats the reason Khan kept holding his head down and repeatedly pushing Lamont. Maidana basially had Khan out on his feet in the 10th rd, and yes Khan showed heart to finish the fight, but the ref couldhave easily had the fight stopped
I couldn't agree with that last paragraph more. About the second round, I noticed Garcia putting his hands up, taking Khan's first 2 shots, then firing his own midway through the combination. I remembered Peterson doing the same thing in the middle rounds of his fight. Khan now needs to show he can make an adjustment, or fighters will continue to use this pattern: come in with your hands high and counter mid flurry.
Yep. He basically is an amatuer fighter in the pros. Ill admit that I have always siad that Khan could give Floyd problems (in no way beat him just give him problems), due to his height, speed and workrate; but after this fight and really his last 3 fights, I have to say that I was wrong. Floyd would beat him ala Phillip N'dou style, finishing him within 9 rds.
outboxer nailed it. Maidana and Peterson u can see thier punches coming. even with danny same. khans problem is he was caught while trading. got hit with a hail mary he didnt see coming and he couldnt have expected a left hook out of nowhere. i also think he is dehydrated at this weight now and doesnt have the legs or the strength to take big shots at 140 anymore thats why garcia finished him and why maidana could not. i think maidana hits far harder then danny
