Max Baer vs Hasim Rahman

Baer took flush combinations from the greatest puncher of all time and it took 5 rounds to get him out. One punch isn't going to do it.

 

Rahman is one of only two men to KO Lennox, and he did it with a single, concussive right hand that left Lennox flat on the canvas. He's not likely going to do that to Baer, both due to the latter's better chin and his crouching style that would take the sting out of overhands, but he could certainly get the latter's attention if he lands, and his pole-like jab would cause the defensively-deficient Baer a whole heap of trouble.

 

I think that Ramhan possibly gets a bit too much credit for stopping Lewis.

It is impresive for sure, but what is his second best stoppage win?

Probably Corrie Sanders. Rahman wasn't a very good fighter, but he had lights out power if you were foolish enough to let him land.

 

Besides Lennox what other decent fighters did Rahman ever spark out? I am not talking about stoppages like he had against Meehan but sparking someone out a legit brutal KO? :huh

Baer was a savage puncher with an Iron Chin against Rahman who had overrated power and a Glass Jaw. Basic physics tells me to put money on Baer.

 

Baer's the one with overrated power. Rahman's power tends to fly under the radar, generally, and is partly the reason why certain idiots think Lennox has a glass jaw.

To what do you attribute Baer’s success then?

Was it his deluxe boxing ability, ring IQ, or fanatical work ethic?

His finishing technique wasn’t even that good.

I don’t mean to be facetious, but you see my argument.

Baer basically got to the top, because he didn’t even have to hit you cleanly to scramble your brains.

 

Above average power, an unorthodox aggressive style and a large size advantage over his opponents.

 

His technique was unorthodox, and had a little more to it than people think. You still wouldn't expect that in itself to get a fighter to the title.

He never had a particularly big size advantage, and gave up size in many of his key fights. When he fought for the title, he was giving up about 50lbs against a better technical boxer.

What does that levae you with?

 

Rahman's jab could be key here, it's certainly the better jab of the 2. Baer had a few problems with jabbers like Loughran and Braddock and Louis to an extent. On the flip side he did overcome the slower Carnera though. Rahman did use his jab and boxing skills well against Tua, Sanders and in the first Toney fight

Both could hurt and KO each other, Baer probably has the better range of power punches, but is maybe a bit of a wide. Rahman is outright the much stronger man here, Baer the more natural fighter, Rahman the better outboxer. Baer could maybe come from behind and knock Rahman out but Rahman would land of his own very heavy punches against a pretty hittable Baer and possibly KO his man.

 

I can't see anyway that Hasim would win.

He doesn't have a great chin, he's not a great boxer and his power is overrared purely becausehe caught Lennox Lewis.

Baer is bigger, stronger, tougher and could beat Hasim at his own game.

It's close early as Hasim starts fast and Baer is just fooling around and coasting. However as Baer heats up and starts to land it a quick and painful turn in the fight for Rahman.
