Mine: 01 Jake LaMotta 02 George Chuvalo 03 Kid Gavilan 04 Juan LaPorte 05 Marvin Hagler 06 James J. Jeffries 07 Randall Tex Cobb 08 Vito Antuofermo 09 Rocky Marciano 10 Oliver McCall I think Panama Al Brown, Ray Mercer and Joe Grim deserves a mention also. Also Billy Graham was never knocked down in a pro fight.
James Tony for real might have the best Chin in boxing history.. it is one thing for a HW to take a HEAVY hit from another HW... it is way more impressive for a MW to take shots from a HW the way he's done it.
The mighty Carl Froch. (This is the only category he will ever have a shot at being listed in the greats for (Maybe resume) So let him have it!)
It's more difficult to rate pure punch resistance, so I like to think of who was most 'unknockoutable.' Marvin Hagler, considering the punchers he faced, might top the list for me. There was a period where I studied his entire filmed career, and of those twenty six or twenty seven fights, the highlights were: - Eugene Hart making Hagler cover up at the end of a round (six?) from a body shot and follow ups. Difficult to tell, unnoticeable to a casual fan. - The Mugabi uppercut, round four. I'm sure Hagler felt it, but it hardly registered, complete composure. - Hearns landing that right hand very early on, plus follow ups. Barely registered on the 'visibly hurt' scale - no stagger or stumble. Hagler ducks a punch, closes distance, recuperates for a moment, then it's 'a good left by Hagler.' Particularly against Hearns and Mugabi, Hagler was right there to be hit, and they were dropping bombs. In his prime, between '80 and '83, I don't think any middleweight could have dropped Hagler. Maybe nobody would even come close. He was a physical tank with sound defensive skills on top.
Opening myself up to critisism, but the only MW I'd give a chance of dropping Hagler to, would be Roy Jones Junior on a flash knockdown. Only way that Hagler is getting knocked down, is if he's hit with something he doesn't see or expect.
Wayne Mc Cullough, took bombs from Zaragoza,Naz,Morales and when he was past his best and fighting a much bigger guy in Scott Harrison he took a 12 round hammering and never went down, what makes his chin even more impressive is the fact he had no power and an average defence..
I think you may be right. From a raw power perspective, maybe Eduardo Lausse could crack him, or Rodrigo Valdes (who I really, really rate for punching ability, although lacking a good body attack) but I doubt it. Harry Greb would surely top the list for fighters lacking film evidence, or much of.
Why? I saw him hurt numerous times, usually from single punches. I've seen Jose Napoles withstand a more concentrated assault without going down (against Monzon).
