Brandon Vera hype

I've always liked Lauzon so I'll check it out

 

Haha I'm not even an MMA fan and I agree with this. Haven't watched MMA in years but when I did he always used to get smashed all over. Didn't Randy Couture even beat him not that long ago? And he is shot to ****.

 

On the subject of Brandon Vera, I ddn't watch MMA even when he was coming up through the ranks and was meant to be a 'phenom' according to Rogan but judging on him more recently, I don't know how he could ever have been considered good enough to warrant the hype.

 

Lauzon is very easy to cheer for. I believe he's now tied for the most ever postfight bonuses in UFC history. I always like seeing his name show up on a card. Win or lose, he fights. And if he senses that his opponent is in trouble for one second, he's going for the stoppage right there. :yep

Vera was, is and never will be anything but a punching bag for guys on the way up. I never liked him. With that said Shogun looked slow, sloppy, gassed like always except much sooner. I was more unimpressed with Shogun then impressed with Vera. I think the injuries and surgeries have taken their toll on Shogun. That or he needs to train and live in altitude, I love Shogun but, he has to have the worst stamina in all of mma.

 

Too right mate, more than anything he just seems like a nice bloke. Easy guy to root for indeed :good

He seemed like one of these guys who is extremely naturally talented, but after getting a little bit of success it goes straight to his head and he takes it all for granted. Also had a habit of showing up to fight while out of shape, and he seemed to have a lot of quit in him too. He clearly doesn't have the mentality of a champion.

Which was why he's getting praise for showing good heart against Shogun. Looked like Vera was outgunned and knew Shogun was the better fighter, he was badly hurt a few times but he sucked it up and tried to grab the win. And he definitely had his moments, but the better fighter got it done in the end after struggling perhaps more than he should have. :good

Most of the cheering for Vera has always been of a sexually induced nature.

When you encounter a Vera fanboy(i.e. someone like Neville or Stoo), it is because they want to suck Vera off.

 

I've liked him ever since I saw him on TUF, and then I watched his (earlier) UFC debut where he beat Jens Pulver in about 40 seconds. Lauzon was 22 and had just KOed the returning UFC LW champion in less than a minute, and his postfight interview was all class. He was humble and realistic about his place in the division.

Then he shows up as a contestant on TUF, and he owns a devastating knockout victory over the other team's coach, but you never heard him talk himself up with it. He knew that MMA is an unpredictable sport and a fortunate outcome fell his way. He didn't seem to think that the victory meant he was suddenly on a title-shot level, the way a lot of guys would have done.

He's been one of my favourites for a while now, and I'm stoked to see him back on track after getting splattered in twenty seconds by Pettis. Though to be fair, that headkick would have pretty much KOed anybody I reckon. :good

I pretty much barrack against Vera just because of his awful tattoos and his insistence on coming into fights looking flabby and poorly conditioned. He seems like a decent guy and all, but it's tough to cheer for someone who runs his mouth talking about being a future ATG and two-division champion, and then doesn't even manage to earn a title shot.

Vera has always had talent to be a serious title contender but IMO his biggest problems are mental problems. Anytime I see Vera is any kind of trouble he makes it look 10x worse then the situation really is and what im saying is that he shows weakness very often. When you have Vera confused or hurt its much more obvious then with most fighters. Another thing is how passive his style is think about if he had pushed down on the gas alittle more agianst Sylvia, Couture and Keith Jardine. Title shots in 2 divisons would have came from it IMO.

 

Very true. Whenever anything goes wrong, he gets this look on his face clear as hell, like "ooooooh ****, what's happening here, it's not supposed to be this way, doesn't this guy know I'm Brandon The Truth Vera?" And then he folds. :-(

But I was more impressed with him last night than I have been probably in any of his other fights I've seen. Not necessarily skill-wise, but three or four times you could see that he was very tired and badly hurt. Then he quite visibly sucked it up and willed himself to dig deep and throw a combination as hard as he could. I don't think I've seen Vera fight with that attitude before, it's just too bad that the apparent mindset change has probably come too late in his career. :-(

Having said that, he still looked out of shape though. Maybe he's just one of these naturally flabby, soft-looking guys. I admit that I thought he was going to get annihilated, because when he arrived at the arena, did his ringwalk and got introduced, he looked like he was shitting himself all the way through it.

Scur... I am sure that you know very well that potential doesn't always translate into great results. I think that people who maybe know Vera a little better than you or I... probably get to see the great potential and talent that he has in training. He also did look great in the Octagon as well before taking his little time off with manager issues years back. He was 8-0 with 2 impressive looking wins in the WEC and 4 straight impressive wins in the UFC including his dominant win over Mir when his hype reached his peak. When he came back after nearly a year off... he seemed like a different fighter. Lazy, entitled... overconfident... ect... It seems like he lacks heart in some cases and folds up too quickly once he realizes that he is in a tough fight. Of course he just fought a war with Shogun, but in the end same result. He looked like he was looking for a soft place to fall when Shogun was finishing him off. In reality, he's in his mid 30's and won't ever be whatever it is that people thought that he may become. Either way... there was plenty of reason to buy into the hype when he was on his run because he looked incredible before the Sylvia fight.

 

Haven't seen last nights card yet will watch it later but on Vera I've no idea where the hype comes from. The UFC have been building him up as some sort of star in waiting for so long. Like Jimmie has mentioned he is too pedestrian. Cost him the Couture fight even though it was there for the taking and Randy looked very tired but Vera just stood off him. There's a good fighter in there somewhere but it's not as good as what Joe Rogan makes out in my opinion. He must be an absolute beast in the training camps for him to get this hype.

Still scratching my head over him getting a shot at shogun not only that Dana saying the winner of that would get a title shot.....
