winston why do irish protestants in the north consider themselves british when their family history has been on the island of ireland for hundreds of years ,surely they would consider themselves irish no?

Some serious amount of ill-informed bollocks been talked on here over the last few days.

The first thing some people need to learn is the difference between 'nationality' and 'citizenship'. They are not necessarily the same thing although often overlap.

Secondly, since the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement individuals born in NI automatically entitled to UK or Irish citizenship. It is not a case, as suggested earlier, that you are default British and then can apply Irish citizenship.

As for BoxRec, we that is a privately owned website and as they have said on a number of occasions 'we can put whatever we want on here'. Their position on a number of issues is hypocritical. They have also changed their 'Nationality' field to 'Ranked In' and generally reflects what authority you took your licence out in. There are tactical and financial reason why a Belfast boxer might take out one over the other but it rarely indicates any national allegency anymore than my holding a UK driving licence makes me British.

 

think its more a case of being most of the outlandishly british to make a point. Like protestants are more british than the brits themselves are most of the time. Proud to be british etc just a northern thing, a lot of the catholics are really republican just to be republican. Its an us v them thing that like it or not still exists. Even in uni where its not as obvious, the GAA lads hang about with the jersey tugger girls, the christian hang about together and look down on everyone, even the prods who drink. The mixed religion groups of friends that were in my class at the start are slowly breaking up into the catholics and prods, just the way it is. Sadly

 

Hopefully Frampton is the man to unite the country over the next year.....

Who boxed for Ireland and was born in Ireland and wouldnt mind being called Irish id say !

 

And wants the British title, and wants to be the best in Britain.. not Ireland.

 

Lads lets just stick to talking Irish boxing and leave the politics at the door. This is a great thread with brilliant contributors and we can all keep updated with what's going on in Irish boxing, doesnt need to be spoiled with politics:good
