Neither are probably the greatest trainer of all time. More likely somebody like Arcel or Futch, not that it can be quantified or proven one way or the other.

D Amato is a legit shout, he took fighters from novices to being world champions with immaculate form.

Most trainers aren't necessarily that good but latch onto talent, get props for a talented fighters success then latch onto more talent

Futch's fighters all had defensive vulnerabilities

Dundee's fighters all seemed to have the ALi style in many ways, whether that was from training around Ali and trying to emulate him or from Dundee himself who knows, although Dundee said Ali didn't like taking instruction so I'm not sure how much he influenced Ali

For the record you can learn more from a sparring partner than you can a trainer

I think D'amato molded more fighters to greatness from nothing. Dundee was a great trainer too although I questioned a lot of what he did in the latter part of his career. I think Cus too had a better understanding of style matchups and what his fighter needed to do to win, even if they were outclassed or outgunned.

Futch probably has the largest and most rounded stable of greats out of any trainer in history.

Dundee was a great trainer, but he was much more useful in the corner than he was in the gym. He seemed to know what to say or do to get his fighter to do what was needed to get the win.

Emanuel Steward also has to be up there for best ever trainers. He's taken guys from the very begining and helped them make it to the top, Thomas Hearns being the most obvious example, but he's also taken guys mid career and clearly improved them, as is the case when he started training Lennox and Wlad.

    For me it goes:

    1.) Ray Arcel
    2.) Eddie Futch
    3.) Whitey Bimstein
    4.) Emmanuel Steward

Then maybe Cus. Dundee just latched onto talented guys as others have pointed out.

goldmill and cus are on par tbh, arcel is good but i love futch he could make a fighter into a much better version of himself, with out changing what makes the fighter, the fighter.

ie frazier same style, but look at the right hands in the 2nd quarry fight and the 3rd ali fight, frazier was more motivated under yank, but under futch he actually had a right hand. the difference from ali 1 and ali 3, quarry 1 and quarry 2 its amazing.

cus is basically anti boxing, once a guys a champ he wants them to fight bums and avoid all the contenders they can.

I learned the most training with a former pro heavyweight. A journeyman but we trained together he didnt just give instructions. an like powerpuncher said the sparring was good because he went easy on me but corrected everything right then an there

all the trainers have 100s if not 1000s of guys that come through gyms, and they do nothing. one guy makes it and then a few more talented guys come into contact and do something bla bla bla. allthough i will say what futch did with frazier was simply amazing, even at the late stage he came along at.

I agree. All the so called "trainers" that I met would sit in there office 90 percent of the time. An on the day of the fight show up an work the corner like their hot ****. It was the trainers staff, the gyms pro fighters tips, and fellow amateurs that you learn from working together.
