Junior Jones vs Marco Antonio Barrera..Why did Barerra get beat like that?

Barrera was used to walking over guys and he met a right hand and awkward foot movement he couldn't cope with. Even Mckinney gave him trouble in spurts

Jones was no joke either, and one of Morales' top 5 wins IMO

Jones had some Hearns in him.

 

Jones was pretty tall with long range behind a decent jab and a cracking right hand. Mix that in with awkward angles and it just worked against Barrera.
Styles makes fights.

 

Because he doesn`t have Morales chin or outside boxing skills

 

I'm not sure because I never rated Jones that highly but he sure had MAB's number

 

Jones was world class, his straight punches and speed and movement was too much for Barrera, much like Pacquaio would be too much for him years later.

If only Junior Jones had the chin or a more defensive style he'd have been 1 of the best ever, he really was that talented.

 

What's the 'even' supposed to mean? That McKinney wasn't all that?

Anyway, when you're cutting down from 135lbs to 122 you can push it too far. Jones was obviously better at cutting weight at this stage. Barrera seemed frustrated when hurt as well.

Barrera back then was a sucker for right hands his fight with "The King" was a good example of it where it seemed "The King" couldnt miss with it that coupled with his careless approach made him an easy target, Jones must have seen that fight and see the ***** in MAB's armor and he took advantage of it time and time again landing one straight right after the other till Barrera was done.

In the rematch Barrera was much more cautious than he had ever been, boxing of his back foot and behind a good jab he made it a close contest but still lost a close decision that some think he should have went his way.

 

Every fighter has that one guy who just matches up with him perfectly, who can get over on him or whose style, skill, and physical ability just troubles the living hell out of him. Jones had those long straight punches that were both fast and powerful, and well timed, both in leading and in countering. He had enough footwork and head movement combined with it to make it tough on Marco. Power, speed, footwork, some cautiousness and countering thrown in, plus Jones was a tad taller, all of which made it difficult on Marco.

Furthermore, I think Marco had been running through guys so much that he was overconfident and probably needed to show Jones more respect than he did in that first fight. At that point, Marco was not the cautious boxer puncher he would become. He was more of a destroyer.

Plus I think Marco made a mistake in doing an immediate rematch. My manager's mentality tells me never do an immediate rematch after your fighter has just been KO'd. You need to give him time to recover his brain, to rebuild confidence, and sufficient time to work on mistakes made. That was one of the reasons why I picked Holyfield over Tyson in their rematch. Still, that Jones-Barrera rematch was very close and competitive, and possibly could have gone either way.

 

Jones had something that worked well against Barrera's style. He threw a very nice straight righthand right down the pipe and that works well against guys who like to come forward. Jones also leaned back and stuck his long jab in Barreras face which blinded him for the righthand.

Barrera in my opinion is a pretty overated fighter. Hes no Duran thats for sure.

 

Jones was talented not just a guy that matches up perfectly and Barrera despite being an excellent fighter, tends to get a bit overestimated as a talent at times.No need to make any excuses for Marco here and he did perform well in the rematch.
