this is the truth :deal america is not interested in promoting a division where their best fighters can't compete with top euro's :yep this is why andre ward is being hyped to extroadinary levels in the weakest 168 of all time :-( carl froch has also benefitted hugely from them sudden american interest :deal
"The defensive champ" he was called in Germany... So safe that he had condom commercials on his back.. LOL "Condomi Sven" was a homeboy just like Calzaghe and Ward. One big joke in my eyes and I was very happy that he retired! Ottke made 4 defences a year.. most against hand-picked C or D-level fighters. Can't really love those type of fighters, sorry! But he was so ridiculous as champion that it was grotesque fun to watch..
He's right there at the top together with Sugar Nikolai Valuev. Edit: He's like the Harry Greb of our time, can't knockout for ****.
For years I thought "The Body Ram" Ottka had the worst right hand I ever saw:?...all he did was hit the guy in his left shoulder all fight long....of course after 9 rounds of that, the guy's shoulder hurt so bad he couldn't jab well any more, and Ottka always took the last three rounds. I realized in his last fight,' the right hand Shoulder Punch' had been a major weapon all along, when he was going for a KO to end his career, he used his right hand to hit the guy in the head and often....well...it had been a mismatched fight to start with. But Ottka could when he wanted actually hit some on in the head with a right hand. He had a good trained right hand....shocking.:yikes I do remember when it was Cal that dodged. First time they were set, Cal hurts his hand. Some name that will not show up of a British manager named something.... offered Ottka 1/3 of what he got in Germany to come to England to fight. That was back when both only had a belt. Ottka did have two belts before Cal....The fight with Mitchell was a great fight. Mitchell made no excuses after the fight. Props to him.:good Said Ottka was much faster than he thought and harder to hit, and the better man won. Ottka agreed with Thorton, had the fight been in the US, Thorton would have won, but it was in Europe where a jab counts as a punch for points, and defense counts for points. That was a good fight. As I recall Ottka only fought one left hander as Champ and had to have a completely different game plan...he won, but it was closer than I expected. No Body Ram. Had Reid stayed with the plan A he'd won...but he changed to plan B, in the mid rounds and plan B was were Ottka shinned. Reid went from brilliant to stupid from one round to the next.atsch And there was enough rounds for Ottka to catch up.:tong I forgot the Johnson fight..Ottka won easy, or easy enough I don't have it in my mind...but there were a lot of fights like that...same o, same o. The Phathom , just out of reach, feinting, feinting some more..., the charge with the very fast one-two-three combo: A great jab and the vicious shoulder punch. & Body Ram...and his practice as defense man for the Boston Bruins paid off. The Great Clinch....or just the little in Jab and go...near as fast as world welterweight champion Curis Coke's fleaflicker, Yep, he won rounds, where he hit the guy once, and the guy didn't hit him, or he hit the guy three times and was hit only twice. Ottka had fast feet. And his lowering just out of range, and the guy not coming at him, had a reason...The Body Ram....
He fought practically all of the best fighters in the super middleweight division, sometimes more than once, and remained undefeated. His resume is actually quite impressive.
I remember watching that live on tv, I didn't like Mundine but I still wanted him to win and he was. Due to the camera angle it was as if Mundine had disappeared ! Instead of thinking he just got KO'd, it was like 'where the **** did he go'...:rofl.
I never liked Ottke always thought he was a paper champion at the time who used home town advantage to lengthen his career. The Reid fight had me seething, the ref was a disgrace and Ottke did everything he could legal and illegal to keep the belt. But he wasn't all bad. He was a world class super middle and he was a good boxer. His style was horrible to watch but it wasn't without merit. His footwork was what stood out for me, he'd frustrate the hell out of his opponents with his spoiling and then ambush them with a burst forward and a hit them and then be gone, in that regard he lived up to his monker "The Phantom". He had tremendous focus and was quick, it was an amateurish style but it was effective though of course he did win some lucky decisions. Ottke also showed far more ambition than Calzaghe at the time. It was he who unified first and because of this it was Ottke who was seen as the number 1 super middle and not the superior Calzaghe. As to why they never fought, it came down to money pure and simple, Calzaghe didn't make financial sense, Ottke could make as much, if not more facing anyone else as Calzaghe just was not a draw and would want too much of the split to face Sven.
One of the best SMW resumes ever and overall greater than any of the current active fighters SMW resumes
His footwork was quite impressive, but also, he was the ultimate defensive "slo mo" fighter in the sense that watching rounds of his in slo mo would show the subtle defensive movements he made to avoid taking hits, blocking them with his gloves or arms, etc without making extensive movements to do so. I almost feel that it took a judge to really judge his matches, if that makes sense.
perhaps he was a genius, but if so he shouldda been a rocket scientist, because as it stands he is easily the worst long term champion in history.
