Davey Boy Green, The British boxer from Chatteris - United Kingdom June 14, 1977 Davey Boy - who came out of nowhere to surprise and batter WBC Welterweight Champion Carlos Palomino for '10-Rounds', and build up an insurmountable lead, only to walk into a 'desperation' left-hook from the Champion in Round 11 - sending 'The Fenland Tiger' crashing, only to be counted out at 2:05 of Round 11. Davey Boy, ran the table to get to 24-0-0 (19 KO's) by April 1977, A) including winning the British-Commonwealt Light-Welterweight Championship in his 16th bout by stopping (TKO 6) Joey Singelton on June 1, 1976. B) then winning the European Light-Welterweight Championhsip in his 22nd bout by stopping (TKO 10) Jeab-Baptiste Piedvache on December 7, 1976 C) then winning the European Welterweight Championship in his 24th bout, by 'upsetting' (TKO 10) former WBC Welterweight Champion - John H. Stracey on March 29, 1977 By June 1977, the 24 year-old, who possessed a sharp left jab, a 'bristling left hook', and a wicked right hand, looked to turn the Welterweight Division into a 'corkscrew'. The 5' 8" boxer-slugger at the time, was really an over-blown Light-Welterweight competing at a higher weight. This content is protected
Slakka, What a great fight, Davey Boy versus Wilfred Benitez in March 1977 at 140 lbs. for the WBA Light-Welterweight Championship. Would Gregorio let his son go to the United Kingdom for that bout ?
Davey Boy at Light-Welterweight. 1977 Possibilities; * Wilfred Benitez * Antonio Cervantes * Saensak Muangsurin Mistake, taking on Carlos Palomino, by getting pressured into it by Mickey Duff. This content is protected
Most recall past it Boy Green vs SRL Too bad At 140 vs Benitez. Thats a damm good fight IF GREGORIO HAD THE RIGHT $$$$$ HE'D BE ON THE NEXT FLIGHT TO HETHROW
i tend to agree with you for the most part, although dave might well of picked up a handful of turnips and chucked them instead of reaching for the shotgun
Davey Boy Green beat Carlos Palomino for 10-Rounds, better than Wilfred Benitez did. Fact, Wilfred Benitez after winning the WBC Welterweight Championship, and defending it versus Harold Weston in March 1979 - was supposed to defend his Championship versus #3 WBC Challenger - Davey Boy Green on May 26, 1979 in Monte Carlo. Davey couldn't wait for the chance, after watching Wilfred have a 'major struggle' with Harold Weston in Puerto Rico.
I'm glad that one never happened. As much as I liked Green,Benitez would have slaughtered him. It would have been similar to Dave's fight with Sugar Ray Leonard. Only difference being that it would have been a few rounds longer.
Dave was one of those fighters, that unless rendered unconcious, would be coming after his opponent no coasting, no rounds off full attacking commitment, so determined and exciting, sadly in world class company more of a "Biffing" puncher, Henry Rhiney may of had more natural talent, but just couldnt cope with the Green aggressive commitment, i still wonder to this day how Davey stood up after taking a massive Andy Hawk Price shot (9th round ? ) Dave's head swivelled like Linda Blair's in the exorcist, but somehow he stayed up, saw out the round....then typical Dave...Came back at Price for the decision, truth to tell, Dave w as not the most talented UK Welter, Didnt Punch like Colin Jones, couldnt Box like Honeyghan, but for sheer excitment and commitment the Fen Tiger took some beating.
