Yep. What complete bollocks those guys have made covering fights. The usual saturday night billing on ITV is about 8-10 million depending on the show. Some programmes do well such as X-factor but alot just die such as the recent Rock-Rivals. Big night boxing guarantee's at least 7-8 million plus if handled right you can build up potential stars and legends. Imagine how many would tune in for Calzaghe vs Hopkins. The BBC got burnt with Fraudly the **** up and now ITV are getting pissed off with Warren and his match making for Khan that boxing shows are gonna be hard to come by unless other promoters go there.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2006/03/10/soboxx10.xml I stand corrected, the live event drew 4.5 million viewers. Which I can definitely believe, this along with Tyson-Lewis was the only fight I've ever known to be talked about by the average Joe on the steet. I remember being able to go into work and speak about the fight, and for once people knew what the hell I was talking about.
it does matter itv gets no extra money for viewers where sentana gets a 10 a mnth or 120-00 a yr thats the difference
i do prefer seeing fights on itv, but tbh, as long as i can see the fight i don't really mind the platform. the only "live" fights shown slightly delayed are the ones the itv or sky would not have shown anyway...so what you going to do? then again, i guess if setanta had not come along, then itv might have been able to twist warrens arm a little more and get him to make fights like this as the only available broadcaster.
i like the idea of hatton taking on golden boy in the uk - that ll mean the phase out of warren & boxing back to the ppl
you cannot blame setanta. ITS THE PROMOTERS GREED THAT IS DOING THE DAMAGE TO BOXINGS POPULARITY setanta have showed some very quality fights. they have made things better for uk boxing fans. i remember in the late 90's, when it was just sky showing the fights and us uk viewers missed out on some cracking fights setanta can only be good for boxing. the powers in boxing want to work with the terrestrial tv channels for the sake of boxings future
Setanta is, of course, good for boxing. After all, they show some of the fights. However, the fact that this marginal, unknown channel got the chance to become "the home of boxing" in the first place, is a disgrace! The home of boxing should be BBC or ITV, prime time!
I dont think Setanta is bad for boxing, they have show some great overseas fights lately. Yes the commentary is not the best but to be honest I dont really care about that. Terrestrial coverage is a disgrace, the lack of it has totally marginalised boxing, when I'm at work talking about boxing people always say things like how much they enjoy a good fight but there's never any boxing on anymore. My point is if it was on terrestrial tv on a regular basis then interest would become widespread again.
It would be great to see terrestrial tv channels throwing money and hype at boxing, but they dont, BBC lost interest with Audley and it wont be long before ITV lose interest with Warren. Setanta has been singing up all the overseas stuff which is great for us hardcore fans, im just gutted that tonights fight isnt being talked about more in the mainstream, Haye - Macca is definetly being hidden away but neither are house hold names if we are honest, certainly not like Hatton, Calzaghe and Khan. SkySports are the men that need to pull their fingers out, they have lost the big money dual for the football which means they have squillions sitting around, but has their product improved? Has it ****! hjave they dropped their prices?! Have they ****! Setanta is still a very new channel, but if they keep the Prem and keep signing the biggest fights it wont be long till everybody has the channel and that hidden away feeling will become less obvious. Setanta is good for boxing they know boxing and want boxing, ITV, BBc, Sky the papers etc dont all seem that bothered. I havent watched skysports news in a while but have they even mentioned tongihts fight...?
Anyone read today's SUN? Warren once again having a dig at the ITV bosses, talk about cutting your nose off dispite your face.
The end is near for Warren at ITV. Seems strange that they bought Froch - Inkin though, maybe they arent pulling out altogether...
i just have to add that i completely agree. only the most diehard of fans will go out of their way to order setanta for boxing. if it was on itv, the diehard fans would watch obviously, but then you would get everyone else with even just a slight interest in sport. i know setanta must offer more money but how much more? surely a lower payday to go on itv will have longer term financial benefits. higher exposure and becoming a household name can mean sponsors and advertising. so you get that and you get an adoring public.
