what happened to Matt Korobov?

Supposedly he has some sort of mitochondrial condition that has derailed his boxing career. He might be done for good, but there's not much information to go on.

I chatted with Cameron Dunkin on facebook back in early May and he said none of that was true about the disease.

At the time he said Korobov should have a fight lined up in two months - but nothing ever happened.
He was supposed penned in for an undercard fight on the Rios/Gamboa fight that fell through.

I just sent Dunkin another message on facebook asking 'what's up?'

Hopefully he responds.

 

He was supposed to fight on the Pac/Bradley undercard too. Ask Dunkin if he still trains with Mccallum in Florida i read someone say they split but don't know if its true as he hasn't fought for so long.

 

I'm almost certain that they split.

I wanted to like this guy - but after the Cory Jones fight I was ready for him to start stepping it up significantly. He had tons of amateur experience/success and he wasn't a young guy. But that was over 3 years ago.... his opponent selection has got to be some of the worst.

 

As accurate as some of Dunkin's responses are, I wonder if Korobov has split from him too? Wouldn't that be ironic he's waiting out his contract, only to sign with Universum and become a star in Germany?

 

lol I do think K2 would be better, Top Rank could not have done a worse job. Going through 6 trainers and trying to change his style hasn't helped.

He's still 17-0 all he needs is 3 fights. Tune up, world level gatekeeper like Lorenzo or Spada then a contender like Barker or Lee and he could be in title contention within 8 months. I still have hope! He just needs to get back into the damn ring.

 

Yeah I keep thinking the same, three 10-12 rounders vs moderate level would put him right in the picture. Problem is I've been thinking that nearly two years now. He gave that interview in February, everything sound great, haven't heard a peep from him since. I look forward to someone doing a story on what's been going on with the guy. Is he hard to work with, doesn't care, or just lots of bad luck?

 

He looked like a damn good prospect for a while. But he's steadily looked less impressive and his lack of activity isn't producing a bright outlook for his career.

 

Here are his problems:

He's almost 30 years old.
He's never once had a professional fight with a meaningful opponent.
He's looked winded in some of his more recent fights in later rounds.... but of EIGHT ROUND MATCHES.
He's never fought a 10 round fight. This super prospect has been a pro for close to 4 years at his advanced age and never once fought over an 8 round fight.
He's bounced around from trainer to trainer. Regardless of who is to blame for this... it doesn't look good.
He's closing in on a year since his last fight.... and he has no named opponent yet/no pending fight.


I'll be the first to criticize a Deontay Wilder for a pretty pathetic professional resume.
But Korobov is just as, if not more, considering his amateur background, pathetic with his resume.

If there were any other top amateur prospect he'd be laughed out of the sport for consistently fighting the level of opponent that Korobov does.

N'Jikam vs Quillin

Meaningful fights have already happened and are about to happen. Some guys with a couple of relevant fights in a 2 year period. And Korobov's name slowly slides off of the radar while the division is at its most exciting in years.

 

Some of what your wrote isn't accurate

His activity was good fighting 7 times in 2009 and his compitition was respectable through his first 14 fights.

12 - Greenridge
13 - Findley had only lost 3 fights, 2 against Ward & Dirrell. This is on youtube and was a real good performance
14 - Walker TKO 1 - Walker had lost UD8 against Jacobs, TKO8 Lee, TKO9 against Mayorga in his last 5 fights.

He fought Primera, Gonzalez, Mundy in his last 3 fights. Primera and Mundy weren't on TV as far as i know so people saying he looked bad his last few fights are talking bull****. Gonzalez was the only fight shown and that was the fight he didn't look good in. This is where he should have stepped up but instead stepped down in compitition. It was somewhere in those last 3 fights that they found that nose/sinus problem that he got surgery or some kind of treatment for and was the cause of his lack of conditioning.

korobov needs to get back in the picture fast.

 

Korobov was one of the 3 amateur stars that turn pro about the same time and was supposed to be a potential star. The 3 guys...Daniel Jacobs, Lara and Korobov. Sadly, none if the are stars, but Lara's almost there. He's gotta get past Vanes and get a big fight.

I think Korobov is done. He's probably a farmer in Russia now.
